Weight Loss is a Mental Game

Friday, October 09, 2009

Weight loss and fitness on the surface is all physical, but what I have learned over these last 9 months is that it truly is a mental game. You need to find ways to keep yourself motivated. You need to find ways to keep your self inspired. Life will throw at you setbacks and temptations and you need to have ways to handle them.

Some of the tools I use include:

A big list of Whys? ...Why do you want your goals or weight loss goals. When you have a list of whys the hows get easier.

Keep your focus. This is where Spark People is so valuable, if you use it daily then you have a daily reminder of your goal.

Motivation and Inspiration. Again Spark People is valuable to me for that. I find a great deal
of inspiration and motivation on the site and with the BSGs.
I also find a great deal of motivation and inspiration in song lyrics, quotes, and yes movies.

Reflection. At the end of the day, reflect on the day. Reflect on how you did. If you slipped by partying too much, eating too much, talked yourself out of exercise, learn from it. Recognize how you could have done better. It will help you with the traps of tomorrow. If you fall down get up immediately.

The mind is like a garden, it needs the sunshine, it needs the rain to bring forth a good crop, and yes it needs cultivating. If you let the weeds grow soon they will take over the garden. The garden will become far less productive or cease to produce at all if you allow the weeds to take over.

Great post, Jeff! And, you are so right! I don't know why it has taken me so long to 'get it'. Denial, maybe?

Great blog, Jeff. I totally agree with your assessment of being active on here and reflecting daily. This weight loss journey is a daily thing. You have to recommit to it every day or else it's just too easy to "excuse" yourself from not staying on track. Then pretty soon you're backsliding down the slope you just clawed your way up!

I like the garden image, Jeff.

Most of all, I agree that if you fall down, get up immediately. The ability to rise from a fall is key to all of this! It's not about perfection, it's about taking the rebound.

No doubt it's mental, 100% of the time. I think I have some cobwebs left that I have to cultivate.

I agree with you Jeff. It is a mental that I am still trying to gain control over.
