totally freaking out over this stupid cake!

Monday, January 25, 2010

Okay so my hubby's bday is now 6 days away. My daughter who is 10 yrs old loves to bake, cook came up with this wonderful emoticon idea lets make dad a poker table cake for him!!! OMG!! So now for about 2 weeks I've been online researching and taking notes on the best tips, websites and all that jazz. Today I baked the cake and now have it in the freezer...later this week we will attempt to roll the fondant...first time using this stuff and pray to the high heavens that it rolls out smooth and gets covered without any trouble!!! I'm reading that you should take no longer than 5 minutes from the time you finish rolling it and then layering it onto the cake WTF??? 5 minutes for our first cake are you kidding me!! I rolled out white fondant today to make some playing cards..those are now upstairs in her closet (hiding) so that they can dry out and then we will paint them (very simply) After talking to dd10 we decided to not make fondant poker chips, but just wash up some from here from the house and just use them. The girl at the cake shop just suggested using real playing cards instead of doing fondant cards....which more than likely may be the way we go. I may end back at this cake shop for candy molds of the club, spade, diamond and heart mold and do little candies in red vanilla and decorate the sides with those...this damn cake is getting to be sooooooo costly!!! and just down right frustrating. While doing this cake though today I had to shave some of it off and I'm proud to say although I did have a taste..I didnt go overboard and eat everyting that I shaved off of it. I also made up the buttercream frosting..that really wasn't a problem totally grosses me out with the shortening that is in it. Thankfully I have a co-worker who is helping me out and loaning me her airbrush thingy so I can airbrush the black onto the cake for the card table portion. Then I read that airbrush can be VERY MESSY I may have to airbrush the cake out in the garage LOL can't wait til this thing is complete.

Cakes take a ton of time to do- but to see the look on the face of that special person you made it for - well, it just makes it all worthwhile.
If you haven't done a crumb coating on your cake- be sure to do so before you cover it in fondant or you'll see those little imperfections. (Other people won't - but you will ~grin~ ) Just keep working to smooth it out and you'll be fine.
The site that I love is CakeCentral- has great tips, recipes and videos- and all free! (There's a great tasting marshmallow fondant recipe on there).
Check the cake shop for sugar decorations, the last time I looked at them, the shop near me had little black sugar clubs and spades and little red sugar hearts and diamonds- maybe 1/2 inch or so. That'll save time and money.
Good luck and I'm sure it'll turn out wonderful! Be sure to post pictures for us!

Tracy, take a few deep breathes and remember it's the thought that counts. I'm sure your DH will appreciate the cake not matter what you do with it. I don't like the taste of fondant so I don't use it when I do cakes but I'm sure that it will be great. Please post pictures for all of us to see.
