Liver and Onions - I had forgotten what it tasted like

Tuesday, March 23, 2010

We went out to eat tonight at Mel's Country Cafe. Mel's has the best cheeseburger I've ever eaten. Mel's and the Mega Mel has been featured on the Food Channel. Mel's is also known for their ability to fry with perfection anything that can be fried. But other than the burgers and fried food, they don't have much else to offer.

DH wanted to go to Mel's for his "last meal" (he's starting his diet tomorrow). I decided to have the liver and onions as it's the special on Tuesdays. I remember my mom making liver and onions occasionally when I was a kid and I remembered liking it.

It wasn't like I remembered. Mother always fried the liver up pretty crispy. This liver was not crispy. And, I had forgotten what the texture of liver was like. DH had never had calves liver -- one bite and he went back to his burger. The meal wasn't bad but it sure wasn't what I thought I remembered it to be.

Darn! What a waste of calories. At least I can justify it a little because I had enough room to spare on the food tracker, I have low cholesterol and I'm perpetually anemic.

Guess I'll take Jolie out for an extra ten minutes before bed.

I always enjoyed liver and onions. I used to make it with a breading that was fried and then poured a sweet & sour sauce over it that even my husband liked. That was the only time I ever had crispy liver. Sorry that you didn't have an ejoyable meal.

i think i would have ordered another burger and ate a portion of it and taken the rest home and also have taken the liver minus the onions home to jolie.

Liver and onions is one of my mom's favorite dishes. I remember being made to eat it as a kid. I would cut a very small bite and then just swallow it whole with a gulp of milk. LOL
