When Are The Good Times?

Wednesday, March 31, 2010

When I was a young Captain in the US Air Force stationed at Hickam AFB in Hawaii, my first wife essentially had a nervous breakdown. It was heart wrenching to see someone come unglued as she did and she required psychiatric treatment. My wife wanted me to attend her sessions with her and the doctor allowed it. I would meet my wife at the doctor's office and sometimes I would get there before she would. The doctor would talk with me while we were waiting for my wife to arrive and I learned a very important lesson from him that was to help me for the rest of my life. At that time I was always looking to the future for my life to get better, then I could enjoy my life. This came across to the doctor and one day he ask me "When are the good times?" I immediately knew what he was driving at. For the first time I saw what I had been doing most of my life. I thought my life had to get better in some way, like make more money or get a better job or whatever the roadblock du jour was, before I could enjoy myself. I instantly realized the future was always going to be the future and it was never going to come. All we have is now, instant by instant. I started looking for ways to be happy now, in spite of any obstacles in life. I recently realized I was viewing my weight loss in the same bad manner. I was thinking how nice life would be when I get to goal weight and how stressful this was if I was on a plateau or if I indulged and gained a little weight. I need to be thinking more about my healthy lifestyle and how I manage my weight within a healthy lifestyle. I can have a healthy lifestyle now. While its true my health will be better when I lose my excess weight, I don't have to wait until I reach goal weight to reap the benefits I'm looking for. I realize a healthy lifestyle is going to have its ups and downs and what I need to concentrate on is managing those ups and downs and not fret because I'm in such a hurry to lose the weight. Afterall, I have the rest of my life to get there.
