Scared to shop

Houston I think we have a problem. I can not go into a grocery store just to buy what I need. I have 2 items on my list, and I always look for fresh produce as well, but its the discount section that always gets me. I feel the need to stock up on stuff... yes, I may use it some day, but I really don't need it. The reduced bake goods section is another huge trap, why do I need to look, its like a really bad car accident. You know you should not look, but at the same point, you need to look. Same thing with day old cakes, pies, cookies and breads. I don't need them, but I gotta check them out, then I rationalize a need, and end up leaving the store with way more than I need... its a vicious cycle, because then I eat all the crap too! Some times in hiding... the last trip had me buying a soup sized loaf of bread, which I inhaled before I was home... this has all got to stop!!!

Please help with any advice-

    Take that visual motivation, that picture of what you don't want to be, or that picture of what you want to be, and tape it to the grocery cart right in front of you! Or, look around at the other people buying that stuff. Unless they have a crazy wild high metabolism, they are probably overweight. That is an incentive not to buy the ooey-gooey, straight on your hips, shoot those trans fats and cholesterol straight into your veins items... emoticon

    Sometimes I put the temptation in my cart and then right before check out, all of the stuff that I don't NEED for budget and/or calorie reasons I hand to the cashier to have put back!

    You need a strategy, so devise one for this situation. Like me not taking money to work keeps me away from the vending machines.

    Here's a thought that might help -- just remember the extra food is not only costing you extra weight but EXTRA MONEY, too. Your grocery budget will be much easier to manage if you don't spend that "discounted price" for something you will feel even worse for buying.

    I have the same problem with online shopping. :) This is going to sound corny, but you may want to write something on your shopping list to remind you of your priorities, such as "I am going to lose 2 pounds this week". Having that reinforcement on your list may help you stay away from things that will end up sabotaging you. You can do it!

    You have to make a pact with yourself that you will ONLY buy the items on your list. Make sure the list is complete before you leave the house, so you won't be tempted to browse. Head for just the items you need..don't leisurely stroll down the isles. That gets me every time. If you need to, have someone come along with you to get the items and you only push the cart. You then aren't allowed to pick up ANY items at all. I know it's hard and takes patience. Good luck!!
