Spreading too much and finding your focus

Thursday, May 20, 2010

I've been lusting after a road bike, and trying to break all kinds of personal swimming record for a couple of months now, as part of my bid to one day become a triathlete. But I've been slowly coming to the conclusion that I'm actually hindering myself. Doing too much and too many things at once meant that I couldn't focus on any one thing, and I wasn't really making the kind of progress I wanted to make. So I've decided to focus on one thing for now: running.

I'm still planning to swim a couple days a week, if for now other reason than that I got a gym membership. But I'm not going to kill myself at the pool, and I'm just going to enjoy the cross training. Likewise, I'm still planning to get a road bike, but I'm in no hurry. I can ride on my crappy Chinese off brand for another year. Plus it'll give me more time to save for a really good bike.

Instead, I'm going to focus on longer runs. On running faster and better. And hopefully do some major distances over the next year. I'm still planning to go into triathlon, but I'll do it with a solid running basis, and maybe a solid swimming basis as well. Doing too much too soon is one sure way of not being able to sustain things in the long run. So I'll scale back, refocus, and go running. Anyone want to do 10K tomorrow?

love this post! Yes, very different to view 'other' types of exercise as 'cross training' rather than seeing them as all of equal importance at the same time. Great longterm goal of being a triathlon athlete-- neat!

    Take care!

This hits home. I'm certainly not going to become a triathelete, nor do I want to....but there are great life lessons to be learned here! I have been trying to do too much as far as the weightloss is concerned, and have burned myself out. I need to get back to basics and take on one issue and be successful at it vs. taking on everything and being unsuccessful with any of it. Thanks for making me slow down and reevaluate what I am doing! Good luck on that 10K tomorrow!! I'll be thinking of you as I just walk around my neighborhood!!! LOL!!
