Now what?

So, I am almost at the end of my first 5K training program, and I compete this coming Sunday. what I am wondering is what to do now.

I am up to running for 4 minutes at a time, with 1 minute walks in between. I do that 8 times to complete 5K.

I am wondering what I can do next week and the next and the next.

Do I work towards running for longer periods for each rep, first 5 minutes the first week, then 6 minutes, etc.? Or do I work on getting faster with my 4 minutes or just adding reps to my 4 minute/1 minute cycles?

Any ideas sparkers?

    I am just impress you did the 5K program. I will be happy if I can just walk the 5K in under 16 minutes a mile. :) WOW keep going and listen to those who know more than me!

    Hmm ... well. first of all - CONGRATULATIONS! That is awesome! emoticon

    Now, ask yourself - which excites you more: working to do that distance faster, or increasing your distance to something a bit more formidable? You could work up to 6 miles/10k, or you could work to run the entire 5k. .When you know which gets your mind racing with ideas and dreams, then you know which one is better for you.

    Mix it up. Sprints, hills, longer runs, shorter rests. It all helps to build strength and endurance. :) Shoot for an 8k! :-D

    Mix it up anyway you want....muscle confusion builds endurance... go for length of running one time and then go for speed another....You are in control!!! Have fun!!

    The sky is the limit. You can do any and all of the options that you mentioned and you can and should mix them up. Also I recommend intervals as well as extended continuous runs. Challenge yourself, but never run hurt. emoticon

    I'm impressed and I can't offer any hints. My knees can do the walking but nothing else. I am definately proud of you, CJ.

    Great job with getting where you are now! I would suggest that you try the first option...running for longer periods of time without walking. Looks like you already have a plan too! 5 minutes, then 6 minutes and so on. You can do it! The best part about running...is after your done--it makes your body, heart and mind feel so great :)
