Photography Day!!!

Tuesday, June 29, 2010

Last week we were contacted and informed that the photographers were coming to shoot pictures of our garden for Country Gardens magazine on Monday the 28th..... that is when everything started to get "REAL" and so exciting. They arrived at 6:00 AM Monday morning to take advantage of the early light so they could get as many pictures as they could before the sun got to high. It was very exciting to see all the props they had for manipulating the lighting to be just right for those perfect pictures. We found out that we had actually won first place in the garden picture contest in which I submitted the pictures I took of our garden at the Better Homes and Gardens website a year ago. We also were made aware of the fact that we would make the cover of the Country Gardens Magazine which is a special interest publication through Better Homes and Gardens. The gentlemen that came to photograph the place were a great bunch of guys and they were very easy to cut up with and have some fun all while being very professional about their job at hand. They shot hundreds of pictures while they were here which took nearly 7 hours. It was fabulous to see my husband get the kind of recognition that he has deserved for many years for his artistic talents. I hung back for a while this morning to let my hubby soak up the admiration he got from them. Then after a while I came out and asked if I could take pictures of them taking pictures! Nick Crow, who is the designer for this and many other publications and the man in charge of this whole process today, came over and shook my hand and said "so your the one responsible for why this all happened!" I said I was just the lady with the little "point & shoot" camera catching the beauty of a garden put together by the hands of my very talented and humble husband who would never think of submitting pictures himself. So here we go....here are the pictures of the professional photographers taking pictures of our garden!

Setting up for the first shots...

Shooting pictures from different angles of the garden...

This is Kritsada Panichgul..."the man behind the camera"

Poor Ty, our big over grown German Shepherd puppy had to be safely locked in the front yard so he didn't steal any photography equipment. He was very curious, of course, so he got a birds eye view here by the gate thinking all the time how much fun it would be to get into all that interesting STUFF!!!

Here were some of the light diffusing equipment they used...

Here is Nick explaining to Mark about their magazine and what we can expect...SO EXCITING!

This is an example of the Country Gardens Magazine in which we will be featured....

So there ya have it folks! A very interesting day indeed here at the Smith house! We won't be in the magazine possibly until next year or later but I will let you know which issue to look for when it happens. I am so proud of my husband and his hard work he puts into this garden. I did tell Nick though that I do have a small hand in the gardening. I am in charge of the fertilizer as I scoop all the animal manure and add it to his compost pile! So I guess that makes me the Queen of Feces! LOLOL! He got a big chuckle out of that...I think he thought we were a couple of wacky country bumpkins but he did comment that it was fun shooting pictures for a couple of fun loving people. I thought that was a very nice compliment as they shoot all over the United States. Day one of my vacation started off with a real bang...I will keep you abreast of things as the come this week.

What an amazing experience. I've always wondered how magazines found subjects for their articles. They really do feature 'real' people. The garden is so beautiful and I look forward to seeing the magazine spread.

Will you let us know when it is due to come out? I am so glad that your gardens (and hard work) will be honored in this way.

Poor Ty! German shepherds like to be in charge of everything. How hard for him to be kept away from the action.
