Well friends I am going to go to California with my 10 year old to see my family. Going to make decisions for my Dad to go to nursing home, he has Alzheimer's.

I need encouragement. I am an emotional, stress, eater. Any ideas to help me with food plans while visiting family. My sister is a great cook, but we have different ideas on what is the best. Hopefully I will be able to turn her to healthier eating by the time I leave. I pray I can stay focused on eating well and drinking lots of water.

I fly into San Fran tonight . We are going to have fun and enjoy our flights. She will keep me on track today. Hopefully. She is the best.

Then we leave with my sister on a 6 hour drive to see Dad on Saturday night. It will be lot of fast food. Quick meals for the next week. I will try to check in every day with updates.

Please pray. I am already stressed and just want to go for the McDonald's cinnamelt. Maybe if I don't go out today I won't be tempted. Or I just won't eat at all. :(

    Try to carry healthy snacks so you can stay full. If going to fast food, choose salads. McDonald's salads are delicious- I don't add the dressing. Also, while dealing with all of this stress and difficulty, just remember that you are keeping your father in a safe environment. It's difficult to do this and the change is hard, but he'll adjust, the staff are well trained, and he will be safe and well taken care of. Good luck.

    Oh Susan -- SO sorry to learn of the reason for your journey!! How difficult that must be! Prayers are ALREADY going up for you as I'm writing this!! emoticon

    I'm a HUGE stress/emotional eater -- so I FEEL your pain!! Maybe if you can take one good "tidbit" from the article above, it'll at least help a LITTLE bit today and while you're gone. ONE of the way I stop myself from driving thru places like MD's is to remind myself of the MONEY I'll save by NOT driving through!! Would that help motivate you at all today??

    Is there any way you could offer to HELP cook -- even though your sister is a "good cook"?? Maybe that way you'd have SOME control over how healthy your meals would be. OR could you suggest grilling or something?? Again -- it's a little easier to eating healthier that way I think...

    My next suggestion is going to sound contradictory to one of my above comments BUT could you maybe "suggest" that you pick food up one night instead of cooking? That way, YOU could make a healthy choice about what YOU would be eating? Are there "Noodles & Co" in California?? IF so, that's not a bad eating out/carry out option. They have ALL their nutritional info online -- so it's VERY easy to make "good choices"! Even with my having to watch my sodium carefully, I can eat a "small" Bangkok Curry from there and not break any of my "ranges" for the day! AND I usually add shrimp for extra protein!

    My only suggestion for "fast food" is stick to salads without dressing or alot of cheese, or their grilled options. Hopefully you don't need to watch your sodium too much...THAT makes it REALLY hard to eat fast food...! I'll keep my fingers crossed that you're able to find some good options...

    Don't NOT eat... That'll be WORSE for you -- physically AND mentally! Even if the next week doesn't got too well, don't beat yourself up!! This whole thing is a "journey" -- there are going to be ups and downs, twists and turns --- maybe this coming week is just going to have to be one of those "downs" and "twists"... My guess is, you'll make WAY healthier choices this coming week than you might have otherwise before Spark!! So focus on the POSITIVE choices you're able to make and don't worry about the rest of it. emoticon

    Susan - You CAN do this. Don't beat yourself up. Choose one thing to focus on ... drinking your water, turning down fried food, avoiding sugar, etc ... and don't stress about the rest. Enjoy your family. You're in my prayers!
