Running Past Mental Challenge

Today I set off to the park for my 6 mile run. I got to the park and did a 5 minute warm up walk and I decided I'd see how far I could go with a jog and no walk breaks. I knew from a previous run that I had at least a mile in me, so this time I focused on keeping a steady pace and not speeding up. I checked my Garmin and 1 mile was done, then I checked it again and wow 4 miles were done. Oh and I was feeling pretty good. But then came the 5th mile. It was so tough and since I'd be heading back to where I was parked there as a "bump" yea what runners call hills. I was breathing so heavy and wanting so bad to just walk it out. My Garmin was going fast enough (I know it was spot on but didn't seem that way). 5.4, 5.7, 5.84 finally came 5.89 then 5.99 and the bell went off letting me know I made it to 6 miles without taking a walk break. Hallelujah! It wasn't easy and I wanted to give up saying to myself "you've got to listen to your body!" and don't get me wrong because this is so true, but I knew that this voice was a brain thing because come on 1/2 mile to go, I'd already did the hardest part. A few minutes and it would be done, and sure enough a few minutes later it was and I relaxed with a cool down walk back.

    emoticon emoticon I hear you loud and clear. It's definitely mental. I remember going through that with my mere 1 mile run without walk breaks! :-) And you're all the way up to 6 miles! Keep up the good work!! (Question: when you did your marathon, did you walk/run, walk, or run??)
