Nutrition, not in my Childhood!

Sunday, October 31, 2010

I’m 52 and I have a Eating Disorder , that started as a young child. Growing up in a household with 6 other siblings there was not a lot of food in the house. I often went to bed hungry. There was no such thing as eating right, just plain eating once a day was all there was. Nutrition was not a part of our family structure. As I got older things had not changed much…sometimes I would walk along the roadside to look for Asparagus to bring home and cook, or eat a mustard sandwich.

I started babysitting at the age of 12 to get some money, so that I could send my bother to the store to buy some soup , bread and tuna fish. Mom and dad often spent there time at the Bar. There were many occasions when us kids would call the bar and ask if they would bring us some food. We would tell them that” they can go back to the Bar after they bring us some food“...., but this had little effect. This sounds as if my childhood was all bad, but I can tell you that this is not the case. Us kids had developed a strong bond and looked out for one another. At around age 15, my parents had stopped going to the bars and had spent more time at home and things got better. There were occasional lay-offs from my fathers work, but public assistance had helped us out.

In my adult years I tried to give my children a different life style than I had. I made sure that my children never went without food , they had 3 meals a day. I had an occasional drink but I didn’t spend my time at the bars.

In 1991 I sustained a back injury and needless to say I gained a lot of weight!
For many years I did nothing about my weight but then ….I wanted to lose weight , but I also wanted to eat right. I new very little about Nutrition, but after talking to my daughter about my concerns she suggested the web page to me….and that’s when my life changed for the better. I now had all the information I needed to obtain my goals. To become more active and informed throughout my lifelong journey. Thank-you Sparkpeople, you’re a Godsend!
