5:00am Everyday ? FORGET IT.!!!

Wednesday, April 06, 2011

For the last couple of days I have got up at 5:00am to get to the gym by 5:30.
I work out for a couple of hours, then get ready to go over to care for my grandson.
He is recovering from hip surgery. He can't put his weight on left hip for at least another week. He has to have some one near to make sure he doesn't fall, and to get his food and give him his meds. Even help him get up and down, arrange a pillow under his leg and get ice for his ice pack.
His parents work and can't take time off. And since I work from home, I can transfer calls to my cell phone, and use the computer there and manage the business quite well.
Yesterday was kind of tricky. I went to the gym, then dressed and over to grandsons house.
His dad left for work. Took care of him till 10.00, then his dad came home. I had to leave and go to a joint replacement class at the hospital. When that was over, I come back so his dad could go back to work. Then my daughter got home about 3:00 and I was free to go shop and do my things.
We almost have to keep a schedule to figure out what shift each person is on.
While I was at the hospital class, I learned a lot more about the knee replacement that I am going to go through on April, 19th.
Hearing the nurse explain the procedure brought the realization home that this is really going to happen. In fact it's less than two weeks away.
After listening to all the facts and what is expected, I still feel very confident that I will come through it fine. I also will have a better recovery than some others. Why do I feel this?
Because I am in such good physical shape. You have to have strength in your biceps and triceps to raise yourself up and to use crutches. I have some good strong arms, from all my workouts.
Some of the women in the class , are not so fortunate. Some of the men too.
When I brought up the question of can I exercise and workout more than the twice weekly with the physical therapist, the nurse said, Oh, yes. You are expected to work out every day.
I said good for I work out now that way and I don't want to lose ground.
Some of the other women asked how they could work out by themselves with out a physical therapist.? They were told that they have to learn to do exercises on their own. And if they want a good recovery they will make every attempt to be active. Here where their coach comes in handy. To be there and help them in every way.
Jim said he will be around to help me and be my coach if I need one.
Talking about people offering to help. One of the women in my water aerobics class has offered to be at the hospital the day of my surgery and to help drive me or do what ever she can to help me. We just met in January. She has a husband who is recovering from heart surgery. He had a blocked artery . Talk about nice, friendly women. I was surprised. But when you get to know her , she is very warm and easy to talk to . We are already exchanging recipes. Low cal ones. Of course.
So after two days of earlier rising, one would think that to get up early again today would be easy. Wrong.!!!!! I woke up at 4:30 am, watched Molto Mario, cooking show. It's 5:00, time to get out of bed. But it's still dark out. And it's cold. I don't want to get up. I turn off the TV.
I snuggle in deeper in bed. I think I'll just wait till 5:30/ Then I can still get to gym by 6:00am.
I close my eyes tight. I want to go back to sleep. I peek at the clock, it glowing with the green numbers , 5:45am. I close my eyes again. I can feel a warm little body in the middle of my back. Titan my little Yorkie is curled up under the comforter sleeping. He's smart. he's not thinking about getting up in the dark and going out in the cold, Sitting in a cold car and going to a cold gym to work out. The only thing anywhere near inviting about going to to the gym is the hot tub I would get into after the workout. That would warm me up and make me feel good. But first I have to get there. I close my eyes for it's almost 6:00 and I should get up.
But it's still dark, besides I think it's colder than it was . After all we are expecting snow in the mountains. In fact the snow level drops to 1000 feet. But not till tomorrow, And that's still an higher elevation than where I live. Oh my gosh, why is it so hard to get up this morning? If I don't get to the gym this morning, or get there late I will have to go later in the day. I don't do good late in the day workout. I an tired and I don't get as much out of them.
I peek out from under the comforter, I think I see some light outside. Oh it's still darkish, but dawn is near. I even hear birds . But I am still in bed. Then the phone rings, oh who is calling at this time of the morning. I hardly look at the caller I.D. Oh, its the bank . They call to let me know when the business balance falls below a certain amount. These calls originate from New York. Well its 9:30 in NY. A nice respectable time. But not here in Salem. It's only 6:30 am.
Oh darn, it's getting too late to go to the gym this morning. But since I don't have to be over to watch my grandson till 8:00, I can snuggle back under the comforter and close my eyes and maybe sleep for a hour. Everything is ready for me to get dressed and run out the door.
So workout I will do you later.
No one should have to get up at 5:00 in the cold dark. Maybe if it was summer and the weather was nice and it was light, the sun was shinning. Maybe then I could get in the habit of getting up that early. It's not like I have to get to a job. That would be different.
I stayed in bed for another 30 minutes, finally i did some stretches and limber up, getting a little warmer..
I jumped on the Nordic Track and walked 2 miles. At least i did something. i will take my resistance bands and do more at my grandsons. My daughter has an exercise room. Maybe there is some equipment that I can use. Oh yeah the stationary bike. I will ride that. it's good exercise for my knee.
Later when I read my horoscope for today I had to laugh. it was right on the money.
"As a natural athlete, Tisha, you like to exercise, but today might be a day to take it easy. You could be feeling a bit lethargic: too much action could lead to injury. Try a less demanding form of activity, like Tai Chi or yoga. Your usual enjoyment of learning may also be on hold.
As you can't seem to focus your mind. Relax watch a movie, a thriller or romantic comedy.
It's OK to do this once in a while>" I'm glad that my horoscope is in tune to my moods.
Later I went to the gym and stayed for 90 minutes. Coupled with my earlier workouts I got in my 3 hours. But not as energetic as I usually am. Today was more of a struggle to maintain my energy level. .
I am off now to take Titan to the vet, for his check up and shots. He won't be too happy later.
I have done quite well on my own eating plan, but I am getting to the point that i want to lose in areas that are still holding fat. like my waist. So I need a fat belly busting food plan.
I am trying a new eating plan, by , Dr. Oz,, called the," One Day Diet." You are on it for at least a month, should loose 10 lbs and 2 or 3 inches off the belly.
Dr Oz says the best weight loss tool, isn't a scale, it's a tape measure. A tape measure will tell you if you've lost risky internal belly fat. Ideally your waist should measure under 33 inches, for at 37 inches you're entering the health danger zone.
My waist is at 37 right now. But considering it was 58 inches I have come a long way.
But not far enough, I want to have at least a 32 in waist. if I can get lower like 30 inches would be the best. Something to work toward.
Dr Oz's plan is mostly the Mediterranean food plan. Most of the foods I eat already. Just some combinations I have to switch up. Lots of fish, vegetables , fruit and whole grains.
It's called the one day diet, because you renew your vows daily to follow your eating plan .
Each morning as you get out of bed, you say"I am going to follow my plan for the next 24 hours ." So this way each day, is the one day diet.
If you follow this plan it will, lower your risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, obesity, cancer and Alzheimer's. But those aren't the only reason it's the basis of the "One Day Diet". It's a satisfying mix of food that's tasteful and playful. And it can help you lose weight because it makes you feel so full, you don't want to eat any more.
Here are the rules to follow.
Rule 1. Renew you vows daily.
In other words work at it one day at a time.
Rule 2. Do something completely different everyday.
Doing something different can help shake up your thoughts and challenge old habits.
Rule 3. Set your kitchen on automatic.
You want to arrange your pantry, fridge and your life so your only choices are good ones.
You'll be eating in satisfying small amounts of olive oil, nuts, avocados, sunflower seeds. Fat makes you feel full longer and gives you a pleasant taste that helps keep you on track.
While you eat fish and lean meats, the bulk of food is vegetables, fruit, and whole grains. The fiber in these will slow your digestion and help stave off hunger without adding a lot of calories. And whole grain isn't just bread. Usually breads are pitas and flat breads. use other grains like quinoa.
Rule 4. Keep your belly full.
One thing you can do to keep your metabolism in high gear is eat. By not letting yourself get too hungry, you'll avoid the carb binge , which sends the blood sugar soaring. In response the insulin rises causing the blood sugar to plunge again. Setting you up for another food feast.
You can still have three meals a day, though a little smaller, and two snacks that include belly=filling protein. Protein makes you feel full, possible because it affects hormones that rule the appetite. So some nuts or low fat cheese, good snacks.
Rule 5. Extend the burn.
Twp easy things to keep the metabolism working.
1. Drink water with every meal. Increases calorie blasting by 34%. Drinking green tea helps your metabolism stay in high gear and whittles away at body fat.
2. Take 20 minutes to walk. Maybe after each meal. That will get you started on the 60 to 90 minutes of daily exercise recommended for weight loss.
But walking isn't enough. to build strong fat burning muscles you need weight training.
You don't have to use bar bells. use your own weight. You will be motivated to eat less so you won't have to lift so much.
Rule 6. Check portions.
One small 1 3/4 x 2 1/2 in. naked potato , 136 calories. If you eat a larger potato 3 to 4 1/2
inches you're adding 293 calories to your meal. And that's with no butter or sour cream.
Those extra 158 calories count. If you are not sure of a portion , . measure it .
Rule 7. Chill out.
Stress can undo your best intentions. Stress produces chemicals that can add inches to your waist. ! Do something nice for some one. 2. Take an Ha ha break. Laugh. 3. Try meditation. 4. Get up and dance. 5. Do something nice for yourself. All these are stress busters. Take you pick or do them all.
I am always looking for more ways or different ways to help me along in my weight loss journey. So this plan by Dr. Oz, is something that interest me. It's not much different that the way I eat already. Maybe a little more whole grains. That could be more carbs, but I'll watch that. I really think it's the combination of foods, that make a difference.
Calories are not equal. Just because someone is on a 1400 calorie plan and someone else is too, what they consume to reach those 1400 calories can mean the difference whether they lose weight or stay the same, or even gain.
If you are interested , the Dr Oz Plan is in the April Good Housekeeping . There is even a 7 day slim down meal plan. It gives you 1450 calories a day . 300 for breakfast, 400 for lunch and 500 for dinner. Plus two 125 calorie snacks. All you need to do is take a 500 mg of calcium.
I'm not much on snacks so i will probably skip the snacks. But I know they are there if I want them. That way I will eat 1200 calories a day.
I'll let you know if I see any change in a month and lose those inches I need to lose.
Well once again I tended to keep this short , but I can't seem to do that.
Maybe next time.
In case you didn't see my feed today I will repeat my quote." Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far they can really go."
So if you ever wonder why I push myself. maybe this explains it.
Take care, stay positive.
Peace and love,

You are right about post-surgery being easier when you are in shape. My sister had ankle surgery recently and was not able to walk with crutches, so was dependent on a wheelchair or knee-walker to get around. You will do great. BTW, I was on crutches for 4 months after an accident (no weight at all on my right foot) and my chest was unbelievably firm by the end. The sisters never sat so high and proud! lol

I got up at 5 a.m. for over 30 years before I retired. I don't think I could get in the habit again. I knew I had to do it for work but I don't think I could do it to go to the gym. I have to congratulate you on doing this!

You definitely have a busy schedule! I will also have to check out the April Good Housekeeping. I usually watch Dr. Oz but I must have missed this one.

Good luck with your knee surgery. Sounds like you definitely will come through with flying colors!

    Hi Tisha!
I am going to buy the April Good Housekeeping and check out Dr. Oz's new diet. I need something new to change up what I am doing. I have been stuck at 163-164 lbs. for several weeks now and am ready to take that last plunge to get to my 160 goal and hopefully below. Ten pounds in a month would do that! My niece is getting married May 21, it would be so nice to be at goal by then, so I can brag to family members that I have not seen in a long time!
I think it's important to change things up sometimes--just to keep your body surprised. I think that's what I need now. I was reading an article about low carb life plans in the new Reader's Digest. Well it might have been last month's. I was reading it on my daughter-in-law's Kindle, and she said it was the new issue, but then when I got home later, I got the new issue (we subscribe), and it was different than the one I read on her Kindle, so who knows? Anyway, this guy says carbs are what makes us gain weight, so he follows an eating plan in his life that is very low carb. I eat few carbs now, just a little bread, and a few potatoes occasionally. Of course there's fruit, which I eat a lot of--so I probably get too many carbs there. It is certainly something to think about. Maintenance scares me.
I'm so excited for you, about your knee surgery. It's a little scary too, but isn't it wonderful to be in such good shape, so that your recovery and rehab should go well? I need to look into that too, maybe hip surgery as well, but I am reluctant. I can still get around alright on my legs, but all I do is walk. I have an appointment to see a surgeon next week about an abdominal hernia I have. The more weight I lose, the more I can see it protruding. Like you, I'd like to lose some of this stomach blubber. I also have some excess skin around my middle, but I'm pretty sure there's also still some fat there that I need to lose too. I am finding bones protruding on other parts of my body I forgot I had, my collar bones, my ribs, my shoulder blades, even the bones in my wrist, which had disappeared under layers of fat many years ago. I love it. Even my legs, which have always been heavy, are starting to shape up. I bought a skirt to wear to my niece's wedding, so hope my legs don't look too fat. Losing this last 10 pounds would sure help I bet.
You're a good grandma to take care of grandson with his hip. I hope you get some of the same treatment from all of them when you have your knee surgery. Sounds like Jim and your water aerobic friend will be there for you, as well as little Titan! Pets can be such a comfort when you're hurting!
You are right--5 a.m. is TOO EARLY! I struggle to drag myself out of bed by 6, and then all I have time to do is get ready for work and make lunches before leaving home at 7. Work-outs, which for me is just walking, have to wait until later in the day! I also take my breakfast with me (usually oatmeal) and eat it at work about 9. I'm hungrier by then anyway.
Good luck, weight loss buddy! Thanks for telling us all about the new Dr. Oz diet. Hope it works for both of us!

I hear you! We're having lower than normal temps up here and it makes me want to cuddle up too. Well, we do share a mountain range I guess!
I love your horoscope! Nice job getting easy but effective action in today. I believe with all the improvements you've made, you'll certainly recover quickly.

I will have to re-read the GH Dr. Oz article as I just got it back from my DIL. I used to watch his show every day but haven't recently as kinda got tired of those silly audience games he plays repeatedly on his show. He does have some great ideas and loves yoga. . .

Your day sounded busy and it is hard getting up when it is dark and cold outside. I did it for over 25 years but don't think I could do it again. . . I'm so glad you had a knee info class you went to today. . .and I know you'll be the model pateient as you already are so fit and have such a great attitude.
