Off the wagon, on the wagon... french fries are my cigarettes of days past

Thursday, August 04, 2011

Yesterday I seriously struggled...& stumbled.

I gave in to a craving at lunch for french fries, & got a veggie sandwich which wouldn't have been so bad probably if it hadn't been on white bread, about an hour after I ate i felt like i could barely stay awake... yep that's right blood sugar spike... THAT wouldn't have been so bad either except the whole REST OF THE DAY i felt like crap... seriously i felt horrible...

I haven't eaten fast food in a LONG time & dare I say I won't be doing THAT again... lol So I had a bad day of eating but a good day for learning a lesson... if I have to indulge in french fries... which i have a serious weakness for , I will NOT combine it with white bread... NOR will I do it on a regular basis. Lol . I also noticed that the fast food ones made me way more tired than the home made ones that I bake myself...

so yeah fell off the wagon yesterday... but i am back on today... so why is it i keep thinking about french fries even though i had some yesterday & they made me feel like shight???? ugh!!! Lol I guess i need to make some homemade ones this week to get it out of my system.

i packed my lunch & am back to my high fiber low sodium quest. packed some yummy stuff from the garden, got to do my best today to reach that nutrition goal. I feel so much better when i do, yet i still have these horrible cravings. I am not giving up, just venting a bit, it took me a numerous tries & years to quit smoking, so i know i can beat this craving, i just need to find a food that satisfies my french fry craving that is healthy & doesn't make me feel bad & easily accessable... yeah...

Sweet potato fries help... but still not the same. maybe i will make a batch of sweet potato fries & also a few regular potato fries in the oven tonight if i am still yearning for them @ dinner time i think that is what i will try.

I will learn from yesterdays error & chalk it it up as an "experiment" in learning. Still need to find something to quench that french fry craving. Today is a new day, onward & upward :O)

On a SparkPeople blog, that I read a week ago but don't remember which it is, some research was reported on. I've been experimenting with the premise this past week: To stay heart-healthy, cut the sodium as potassium is raised.

Interestingly, as I do this, my cravings change; as I get plenty of potassium, I salt my dry-beans less, salt my meat less, forget about refined carbs.

If I eat plenty of both sodium and potassium, I want to graze all day long, or I crave meat and reduce my consumption of the big-potassium foods.

I'm still watching how this sodium-potassium axis affects me.

I keep "emergency fries" in the freezer.

I buy frozen fries from Whole Foods, which have no scary ingredients or bad fats (choosing the appropriate brand/variety, of course). If you don't have a Whole Foods or health food store nearby, try various grocery stores and "big box" stores (it may take a lot of ingredient list reading, though I did find ONE healthy variety at Meijer). I recommend against the scary varieties with ingredients lists a mile long...I assume those would make you feel just as icky as the fast food ones did. :-/

I measure out a serving (for me, that's about 4 ounces) of frozen fries into a bowl and microwave them for 4-7 minutes, depending on how thick they are.

It's not as healthy as homemade, but it helps me get through dinners out when I know I have fries available to me on my own terms. I also don't eat too many, since I am too lazy to go through the process of making a second batch. LOL

It's a bit embarrassing to admit that one of my tricks is microwaved/frozen/less-than-homemad
e, but it sure has saved me a lot of calories! :-)

I think home made fries taste better, something about being able to control the freshness of the oil the spuds are fried in. I have not tried oven fried yet but it sounds like a good option. I had fries on Monday simply because they came with my meal I
ate only about four since they came very salty.
Have a super day Cheers emoticon
