Gym Debate

Sunday, August 07, 2011

Hi. I am debating about getting a gym membership and guess I just want to think outloud with feeback.
I used to have a membership to 24 hour fitness. When I first got it, I went regularly for about 3 months. Then we moved and it was a bit farther, yada yada. I paid for about a year and cancelled it. I hate exercise and although there are many free options at home/walking around neighborhood, etc., but just have no interest. The one thing I do like is water aerobics/swimming. I also like classes(if I can find one for my schedule).
Anyway, there is a good deal right now at LA fitness, still cost money though.

I have been down that gym membership route several times in my life. I just am not sure it is worth paying enrollment and membership dues that lock you in. I have belonged to a fitness center that had higher monthly fees, but you can drop and add month to month. This worked better for me. My only advise is to make sure and read the fine print, check the length of the contract, can you suspend, penalties for canceling and other hidden $$$s that will add up. Today you even have to consider the additional cost of gas to get to and from a gym.

I recently joined LA Fitness and I love it. I used to be a member of a different gym, several years ago, but it was a total joke in comparison. I love that I don't have to sign up for a half-hour time slot on the treadmills or elliptical machines anymore!

If you're going to pay for a gym membership...Crossfit is 150% worth the cost. The classes are challenging but they'll scale them to your fitness level; the coaches are AWESOME; you will totally see results if you stick with it. They usually start you out with a few one-on-one sessions to assess your fitness level and teach you how to do things correctly :)

    Also, it's super addictive.

The first thing I am doing when I get a job is joining LA Fitness. I've been learning to love exercise and I'm kind of chomping at the bit to get access to other machines/a pool/an indoor track.

Like you, I also hated exercise, but I know it's necessary to my success. I started with just 15 minutes a day - every day - for 21 days so I could create the habit.

I know the gym is an investment - but LA Fitness (and I think other clubs) let you suspend your account if you want to take a break. Right now, I think I am worth investing in - and my husband wants to use the pool!
