"I'm not on a diet."

Wednesday, August 24, 2011

I am fed up of repeating the above statement. I am not on a diet, I am making a lifestyle change.

Just because I choose not to have a doughnut or a muffin that you've brought into work, does not mean I'm on a diet. I'm making a conscious choice to eat more healthily, and just because I've refused your offer this time, does not mean that I will refuse it next time.

Just because I am having a salad for lunch, does not mean I'm on a diet. I prefer to eat fewer calories for lunch, because I prefer to have a substantial tea as it stops me snacking in the night.

Just because I am avoiding take away food does not mean I'm on a diet. I am trying to save money, so there is no point wasting money and calories on take away.

Just because I am not drinking as much, does not mean I'm on a diet. I do not like myself when I've had a drink and I'm trying to cut down on this, this does not mean that I won't be as fun so please don't try to force me to drink.

Just because I'm going the gym more often, does not mean I'm on a diet. I am trying to look after myself. I want to be healthier and happier.

I am fed up of other people trying to bring me down and make me stray from this path, I am making a choice to change my life and you cannot change that.

I know what you mean, it does get a little old hearing, "You want a doughnut? Oh never mind, I forgot you were on a diet."

For some people, in some circumstances, that is all they are able to say because the truth would be pretty ugly. It might go like this, "You want a doughnut? Oh never mind, I forgot that you decided to not eat yourself into an early grave like the rest of us. I forgot that you are no longer victim of an advertising campaign that has the rest of us convinced that we will have more fun in life if we eat more doughnuts. I forgot about the obesity epidemic that is plaguing the post modern world. I'll just eat the doughnut myself because I've got a tumor and a case of gout that I'm working toward having in my old age and this ought to help. I forgot that you found your power and I feel powerless to change."

When anyone mentions this "diet" that s/he is convinced that I am on, in my head I imagine what they would be saying if they really told the truth. It keeps me from getting frustrated because I totally understand why they wouldn't want to address the truth. I didn't want to address it either and I didn't for years. When someone around me decided to be more healthy, it made me uncomfortable because, in my mind, it shined a spot light on everything that was wrong with me that I wasn't ready to fix.

You might try that the next time someone mentions your "diet". In your head, fill in the lines they would have to say if they told the truth.

Love your blog! i get that all the time, when i'm at work i'll write down my grocery list and people always say "jeeze this new diet is really making you eat super healthy"... this is NOT a diet this is a change for life. Just remember those quick fixes never work and people will be jealous of your lifestyle change when you're skinnier and more fantastic than they are :)

Great blog! My office always has doughnuts, cakes, cookies, etc. My goal is to change the culture and encourage people to bring in healthier snacks.

Ignorance makes people not understand that you have chosen to better yourself and that you prefer adopting a healthier lifestyle rather than living a life that you might regret in your old age. I hate it when people judge my lifestyle but I have learned to ignore their comments. To me they are trowing water on a duck's back. Keep doing what you have to do to maintain a healthy body and lifestyle emoticon
