Balance - the elusive goal

Sunday, September 25, 2011

I was thinking today about balance in life. It's great to have goals and passions, but not so great if they steer your life off balance in unhealthy ways.

For example, successful business people and professionals may have achieved a lot financially and career-wise, but at what cost to their health and relationships? I'm not saying it's impossible to be a high achiever in your profession AND be fit & healthy (both mentally and physically) AND enjoy great relationships, but it's challenging.

The ultimate guide should be your wellbeing and that of others, and once you put this principle first, then it becomes easier to set your priorities.

One great way to make time and space for important things is to cut down on TV. Not cut it out altogether, because there's a lot of great programmes on TV, but definitely cut down if you find youself habitually sitting in front of the telly on a regular basis for hour after hour in the evening.

And when you do watch TV, you can often be doing other things at the same time, so you're multi-tasking productively. You can exercise in front of the TV, make lists of things to do the next day, and when the adverts come on, make good use of those 3 minutes by tidying a room. It's amazing what you can accomplish in a 3 minute burst!

Would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I put a TV in my gym so that, sometimes, instead of vegging out in front of the TV, I can be in the gym instead. Doesn't always work out but can make a difference
