I can't believe it! I had an aha moment in the kitchen. This wouldn't be anything big for anyone else (or even deserve a blog entry), but I am a novice cook. I have been teaching myself to cook for the last couple of years. Some experiments have gone well, while others....well, lets not talk about those.
Anyway, back to my aha moment! Picture it...Pots on the stove, lentils simmering away....On your way to a perfect lentil soup (new lentil soup recipe). Everything looks good....Time for the taste......EEK!!!! SUPER SALTY!!! Aside from the salt, it tasted pretty good - garlic, curry.....But my GOD, the SALT!!! 'hack. hack'
So then, novice chef that I am....I have an 'oh crap, now what' moment.
My first thought was ask the people on Spark, but thought that would take too long to get an answer and then my yummy (potentially) soup would be toast. So, I decided to do a basic search. Who knew, that there were so many people out there who made really salty lentil soup??! I sure didn't! But thanks to those who cooked before me, they had the solution to my problem. Ready for the words of wisdom that I learned???!!!!?????
Yup. Cut up a potato and toss it in the soup to simmer for a few mins. It soaks up the salt. THEN if it is still too salty add a little lemon/lime juice. Who knew??!? My soup is saved. Tastes uber yummy, and I feel like a genius. Well, more like a recovered cooking klutz. But never you mind! The genius feeling outweighs the klutz at the moment.
And I have yummy soup for the week!!!
