Facing Fear (7): Deleting e-mails

Tuesday, January 24, 2012

Yesterday, I faced my fear by deleting A BUNCH of emails - about 40% of my inbox.

I hold onto them for way too long, for fear that I'll need something someday or someone will ask me to prove that I did something. I realized that is ridiculous. I'm a competent professional with a good reputation. I don't need proof of everything that I do.

Woo Hoo!! Maybe shedding e-mails is a metaphor for shedding pounds??

Wow Banana-Person, can I ever relate to this one. My business heavily relies on email as a form of communication. Already an electronic pack-rat, early on I adopted a practice of never, ever ever deleting an email.

Reasons: they are written records of conversations, directives, opinions and decisions. They may bear on a client's willingness and requirement to pay. They can be helpful during (what I shall call) HR incidents. The remember, when fallible human minds forget, spin or otherwise recall things imprecisely.

I live, eat, sleep and die Microsoft Outlook. How I do not get inundated by emails is to create categorical sub-folders for filing (by client, date, subject, whatever works). Usually I can easily find for what I search, particularly if I am intelligent bout subject lines in the first place. That said, Outlook has its limitations in terms of capacity...so..

I do delete emails too. Never without cold sweats trembling, high blood pressure and rapid heart rates but I do. Kudos to you for doing it with the calmness and serenity to blog about it. Not here...

I can definitely relate to this one! Maybe I should get rid of all the emails greater than a year old!

Boy - could I relate to this one!!
Unfortunately, I have had too many instances where I was saved (not from anything bad, but from lots of extra work) by being able to reference back to an old email.
Good for you that you are coming up with great fear busters each day! Keep up the great work. And thanks for the goodie.

Amazing, I did the same thing today. Printed out what I thought was important and deleted the rest. Just another means of cluttering.
