Today was one of those glorious days we're lucky to experience here in Portland - it was cold, bracing cold, and windy as heck, but boy that sky.... such a gorgeous blue, bright, brilliant, beautiful to see. And dry! No Rain! WooHoo!
Seven of us from the SparkPortland team met up at the Oregon Food Bank to volunteer our time to a worthy cause to help others.
Song-of-Debra, CJanness, TaoLoser, GayeMC, AniDuck, and Bill and I met up at OFB a little before our shift to get to know each other a bit face to face. We'd all seen each others' names on Spark and the team discussion boards, but for several of us, this was our first meeting.
Along with our team, there were volunteers from a local high school as well. It was quite a crowd! Today, we bagged two pounds of rice, inserted instructions into the bag, and twist-tied them closed. The bags were placed into boxes, then the boxes were sealed up.
It was a pretty straight-forward process and it was amazing how much rice we processed in the two hours. I believe Mike, our coordinator today, said we bagged up over 12,000 lbs of rice! It's hard to imagine!
Once again, we forgot to take our camera.
I did have my Blackberry though and snapped a few pictures of our team.
GayeMC and CJanness lookin' stylish in their headwear and aprons!
Song-of-Deborah rocked those bags of rice! You should have seen her twist-tying like a pro!
Bill was the rice scooper, and AniDuck made sure the rice made it in the bag. Teamwork!
TaoLoser was our strongman! Dude was heftin' up 50 lb bags of rice and toting them about, replenishing the crates of rice the scoopers like Bill were portioning out.
One big happy family! From left...
TaoLoser, CJanness, moi, GayeMC, and Song-of-Deborah. AniDuck had to leave before we snapped the picture. Bill took the picture for us.
It was wonderful to meet more Sparkers face to face. I think everyone had a great time, and we're all looking forward to another opportunity to volunteer our time again, not to mention getting together for other fun activities.
Hikes, walks, just general get-togethers. SpeedyDog asked a question on my last blog about what benefits there are to running with a group (I had referred to my Galloway tribe). I think for me, the biggest thing (aside from running better overall) it's the friendship and camaraderie of spending time with people who are working toward the same goal. That's what SparkPortland is to me.. we're working toward a similar goal - maybe not the exact same goals, but we all want to be healthy, fit, and active. Doing something about it, working toward meeting our goals WITH someone makes it seem much easier and less like work.
I love SparkPeople, and I love my SparkPortland teammates! Thank You for participating and making this such a fun event.
