Facing Fear (15): Brutal Honesty

Wednesday, February 15, 2012

I over celebrated valentines day yesterday. My husband & I decided to celebrate by making a bacon explosion (see http://www.bbqaddicts.com/blog
/recipes/bacon-explosion/ for a full explanation).

Yes! It represents our relationship much more accurately than chocolate & flowers!

Yes! It was delicious!

Yes! I had a couple of beers during the 2.5 hours it took to cook over indirect heat on the BBQ!

Yes! I went way over my calorie total.

When I woke up from my bacon-induced sleep this morning, my first thoughts were on how I was going to report in to spark people. Was I going to just skip yesterday's tracking? Was I going to create a dummy entry for "valentines day binge" (search binge in the food tracker - there are lots of binge entries)? In the end, I decided to be honest. It wasn't pretty. I went 1,300 calories over my range yesterday (that's 1/3 of a pound!). But I'm glad I faced reality. It helped me to realize that my life involved bad as well as good days. I'll be much more successful if I can learn to embrace both.

yep, it happens to the best of us!
i feel like sometimes we have to just let loose! and sometimes it is even too hard to track accurately - and heck, i happen to have a "costco sample" item i made IN my favorites tracker... should i be embarrassed to admit that??

My indulgence for V-day was Tex-Mex. I, too, debated whether or not to track that meal. In the end, I did track it. After all, I didn't really feel guilty and choosing to not track one meal makes it easier to do it the next time. It was a splurge and, now, it's over and time to move on. I think we all need those once in a while. Sounds like you had a great time! I'm going to have to check out the bacon explosion. :)

It's okay! Yeah you cringe at the thought of it, but imagine life without ever an indulgence. I've heard a lot of healthy eating advocates saying eat healthfully 80% of the time. That leaves a little wiggle room in there for on over-the-top day now and then. For myself, I think I won't lose weight if 2 days out of 10 I throw caution to the wind. But I like the sense that an occasional treat or indulgence is part of normal healthy eating....... unless you're just so perfect that you never ever ever fall off the wagon... and that's not me! :))

We all have those days. Good for you to face the music! It's so easy to just skip it (I've done it plenty of times!). But you can acknowledge it, accept it, and move on - which is sounds like you have done. Keep it up!
