You Can Do This

Wednesday, April 25, 2012

I looked at the number on the scale and cringed a little bit. I had gained weight before, but never quite this much. Of course the scale was off, skewing my weight to make me look heavier. Still, I couldn't deny that my clothes no longer fit. My face had gotten rounder. Okay, maybe I had gained the weight.

My experience with the scale was at the gym, but my wife had her experience at the doctor's office. We blamed all sorts of things: Christmas candy, birth control, normal aging, etc. Her doctor told her about SparkPeople, and she came home and told me. I thought this was going to be one of those things that just didn't stick with us. But I'd give it a try, I figured.

I set my goal weight at 195, because that was what I was as a freshman in college. Sure, that put my BMI at 26, but I was big boned. To get into a normal BMI you had to have no muscle mass, right? (Wrong.) My wife was more ambitious than I was, setting her goal weight at five pounds less than her lowest adult weight.

As I carefully counted my calories, logged my fitness, and made better health choices, I was surprised how quickly I reached my goal. Then I was done. 195 was a beautiful number, one I figured I would love for the rest of my life. The day I saw 194 on the scale surprised even me. All at once, I wondered if I could actually get to 190.

Of course I had my sights set too low still, so the first day I fell below 190 shocked me almost right off the scale. The same happened the day I fell below 180 and the day I fell below 170. My wife's "ambitious" goal has been demolished as she has lost an extra 15 pounds.

This post is not to brag; it is to say that you CAN do this! I am not a disciplined person, but getting healthier doesn't take a fad diet or complete abstinence from foods you love. I've been as surprised as anyone else to see my new body shape, but it's here.

I didn't think I could, but I got healthier than I ever thought possible. You can do it too. It takes time, but it's worth it. Remember, this is a lifestyle change that will make you feel, look, and think better. You CAN do this!
