A Girl with a Plan

I’m all fired up and ready for summer… and ready to keep turning up the heat with my accountability buddies!

First, I needed a long-term goal that didn’t involve the scale. It’s time to build on the progress I’ve made, and let the rest fall into place.

So I signed up for the Rock and Roll ½ Marathon coming up this August in Providence, RI. I worked at it last year, and it looked like too much fun to pass up. And I was in the medical tent, so that’s saying something! ;)

My main focus is going to be on running, but I want to take a whole-body approach to becoming the best runner I can be. This means developing a new attitude about food as fuel, and a lot more yoga and pilates.

Because the temperature is starting to rise, I’ve switched to early-morning runs. (Ok, I just switched on Friday, but it was fantastic!!) I plan to do 2-3 short (3-4 mile) runs during the week, and then a long run on Saturday or Sunday. I’m making yoga a requirement for those afternoons – it really stretches everything back out – and I’ll fill in pilates or a ballet workout on days I don’t run.

Food… has been an issue lately. I think I went too low carb for a while, and my appetite reacted by making me STARVING for crap carbs. Ugh. So I’m going to begin paying attention to my ratio of carbs, proteins, and fats. I also want to work more fruits and veggies into every meal, as I know I’ll be extra hungry as I start to rack up the miles.

I warned DH that this would be the summer of getting healthy… I’m not sure he quite gets what he’s in for!!

It's soooo nice you have this morning strategy that knocks out a lot of birds with one stone. Think about just how lucky we are to be able to run - to decompress, unwind, keep more fit, detox, all rolled into one fabulous activity :) pretty darn time efficient, right? I'm sure I'll appreciate this even MORE when I'm a mother too.

For quick morning runs, I just lace up and go. (Seriously, I'm considering just going in my jammies... no one's out there, anyway!)

For a 3-4 miler, I don't really need to eat first. But before a long run on the weekend, I'm all about the PB&J on whole wheat bread, and a couple cups of coffee (yes, coffee) before I head out.

I hear ya on the morning running! It really does set such a lovely tone to the day! It's smart you do it so eeeaarllly since you don't miss that time with your fam and you have the energy to burn!

Do you eat a small bite first or just lace up and go?!

So far, so good... I've introduced more whole grain carbs into my diet this week, and I haven't wanted to raid DD's snacks so far. (Those goldfish are addictive, I tell ya!) I've hit about 50% carbs for the last couple of days, and that seems to be the right level so far.

I run SO much better in the mornings, it's not even funny. In the afternoons after work, I'm exhausted from the day and I'd much rather be with DH and DD after being gone all day. In the mornings, it's quiet and lovely, and the family is still sleeping so I don't lose any time with them. Plus I'm a happier camper at work when I've burned off a little steam in the AM. ;)

Good plan! I like your non-scale focus!

That half is just around the corner! I hear you on the morning running and the sweltering heat... I plan to give it the a.m. schedule a go this summer too!

If you ever go lower carb, let me know since there are definitely a handful of strategies you'd want to use to prevent that carb attack from happening, but I agree that you're probably better served sticking to carbs when training for your race - the alternative, ketogenic very low carb / high-fat training (using fats as energy source vs carbs) has a big learning curve and involves a little "carb flu" as your body keto-adapts - it's not well-known or mainstream, but it IS possible and there are plenty of endurance athletes who do this.

I'm so pumped for you about your August race! That is going to be such a FUN one! Have a great week, running!!!

If you are going to run a half marathon you will have to increase your carbs big time. almost half of your calories should be carbs. good luck and go get them!!!!
