Understanding and Wisdom are for us!

Scripture: Ephesians 1:15-21, esp. 18b-19

15 Therefore I also, after I heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints, 16 do not cease to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers: 17 that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, 18 the eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints, 19 and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe, according to the working of His mighty power 20 which He worked in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly places, 21 far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come.

Observation: This whole selection is one of the prayers that Paul prayed on behalf of the believers to whom he ministered. I didn’t want to take a couple of verses out of context but do want to zero in on a couple of things Paul said: 1) he wants us to know the calling we have in Christ; 2) he wants us to be aware of the spiritual inheritance we have in Christ as believers, and 3) the extent of the power that God extends on our behalf because we are believers in Christ. Each one of those points is a sermon in itself, but they are related to each others: one doesn’t seem to be possible without the others being present and being accurate.

Application: In my mind, number two above needs to come first. I need to discover from the Word and from prophecy the extent of the spiritual inheritance I have in Christ, because He has His hand upon me. When I know that, I can be more confident in discovering, in knowing the calling He has for me and more confident that I can actually accomplish what He calls me to do because of the inheritance He has for me. As I walk in this calling, number three is revealed: I can see the “exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe,” that extends on my behalf so that I can fulfill the calling He has for me. Unless I walk in the calling on my life, I don’t need the power available to me.

Prayer: Father, help me to press into You and discover all that You have for me. Thank you that I can be confident in Your love and acceptance (vs. 6) and that I have the spirit of wisdom and revelation (vs. 11) in discovering your will for my life. Thank You that You have empowered me to fulfill this calling and have already gone before me, preparing the way for my success in YOU! Thank You for guiding my steps and helping me to accomplish that which You have called me to. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Years ago I started praying this prayer over myself and saw my own spiritual growth take leaps and bounds into maturity! God wants us to know these things; to have His wisdom and understanding and to know Him and what He has called us to do. He has freely bestowed on us the same power that raised Christ Jesus from the dead so that we can be and do the things that He has planned for us. He hasn't left us to do anything on our own, but has fully equipped us to be able to further the kingdom of God in the hearts and lives of those around us!

What an incredible gift you have to bring us the word of God in such a meaningful and rich way. Thank you for a terrific devotional. Paul's prayers are such a great example of the way we should pray more often: praying for others in their unique faith journey. Now to go back and read it for a third time.

I'm also amazed that Paul can show such gratitude towards others while in prison. A great man, indeed.
