Blogging Before Planned Power Outtage

Tuesday, July 03, 2012

The power is being turned off in my neighborhood for about three hours and I wanted to blog before that happens in a few minutes. They are doing a repair, so at least I can plan around this.

However, it really reminds me how our world would be very different if we lost our main grids for any reason. Wow, think of all the people who'd go haywire not being able to text or tweet!

WIshing all a happy day and a fun and safe 4th. Happy B'day USA!

My husband would have to be put into a loony bin if he lost his ability to facebook.

At least you were warned! We lost power at work yesterday. There was a cable company truck working on a pole and they claim they didn't do it - but it's quite the coincidence that they went up the pole and our power went out. I ended up taking my work home with me and doing it there, but I couldn't do most of it since I couldn't log into the servers here. Makes me realize how bad things would be if we lost power for a long time or if the systems crashed. What did we do before electricity?

We lost a main power grid a few years back and it left our entire town powerless for just over 2 full days. Can't touch the fridge or freezer or everything inside it was garbage within a few hours, especially in the heat wave we were having at the time. No stores could open (I didn't realize that I depended on them so often!! Couldn't even get more propane for the BBQ or gas for the car and it was more than just our town, even further than our county. It was almost all of southern Ontario and parts of upstate NY. It just goes to show you how big a main power grid truly can be!! It sure can be a big eye opener that's for sure!!

we lost power here for a week in october right before Halloween we had no way to heat the house. we felt like little house on the prarie lol. we washed our hair with cold water in the sink and dryed it in the sun. My son made a soup in a big pot with all our meats that was going bad outside on a real camp fire, best soup we ever had. we all huddled on the couch and tried to read or play cards from the light of one small lamp and i have teenagers. But they both walked up the street to the firestation to plug in their laptops and phones . It brought us together but i wouldn;t do it again.

We had something similar at work a couple months ago with the power company replacing some major item and shutting power off for 6 hours.

The biggest concern I'd have from a power outage (which is kind of sad) is the food in my fridge and freezer. In the past I might have simply eaten anything that didn't need heating to "save" it. Being out of contact wouldn't phase me. I'd just read or go for a long walk.

Planned power outage. At least you had a heads up and could prep for it. Hopefully they will finish the repair early.
