I Am Officially a Statistic. I've Been Laid Off.

Friday, July 06, 2012

I'm stunned, kinda shocked; but not terribly surprized. It's not like I didn't see this coming. I just wasn't expecting it to happen TODAY !

Yes, I've been laid off. I'm okay. I guess I'm still trying to digest everything that happened. Around 2:30pm, one of the managers asked me into the conference room for a chat. I knew something was up. Little did I know I was being laid off. The manager was pretty broken up. He started crying and the next thing I know, I was crying a bit too. I was trying to stay composed because like I said, it's not like I didn't see this coming.

Last year was a good year for the company. We even got Christmas bonuses ! Unfortunately, the money started drying up at the beginning of January. The business just wasn't coming in like it did last year. I had talked with the head of accounting. She said that we were having financial problems. She said we were barely making pay roll. That concerned me, but we'd survived rough times before. Yes, we've even had lay offs, three in fact. However, I didn't survive the fourth round of lay offs. According to my manager, the owner had to take out a loan to make pay roll.

I wasn't the only person let go. There were two others too. And this wasn't about seniority. Other senior people had been let go in other lay offs. I had 16 years with the company. Another co-worker had 18 and the other had 20+. Yeah, that's a long time with the same company. I did enjoy working for these people. Yes, it could be frustrating, but we always managed to get things done.

Everyone was crying. Everyone was upset. Who wouldn't ? When I first joined the company, there were 48 employees. Over the years, people left and weren't replaced. There have now been four lay offs. Yesterday, there were 16 employees. Today, there are now 13.

My friends were feeling bad for me because I lost my job. The fact is, I feel much worse for them because they now have to do everything I did on top of their own jobs. While it seriously sucks to be laid off. I've always felt bad for those who got left behind because they're going to have to pick up the slack.

These are good people. I know they'll work things out. But, it's going to be a lot of stress. On top of the work stress, now they too have to wonder if they'll be laid off at a later date. I hope not, but I told my friends that it doesn't hurt to have a back up plan. Because I wonder if the company survives by the end of the year. I sincerely hope so.

I was given a small severance package as well as two weeks vacation I hadn't taken. Fortunately, I have been saving my money for just this kind of emergency situation. I still have my part time job at the gym. That will help along with unemployment if I can't find a regular job quickly. What's really good ? Prior to my getting laid off, I was up for a promotion at the gym ! They were looking for a group exercise manager and I was recommended. Needless to say, I'll be pushing to get that position now.

Of course, I feel bad on that front too. The reason I am being offered the job is because the person who currently has it is either being fired or given a different job in the gym. I don't know what's up with that. I also have a couple of leads to possible day jobs. They won't pay much, but at this point.... I'll take whatever I can find for the time being. If I have to work a couple of part time jobs, that's what I'll do.

I expect I'll go have a good cry later this evening. What can I do ? I really do feel badly for my friends I left behind. It's going to be a mess. Told them they can call me and I'd give whatever advice I could. No one is happy about this. It was a small company. We all relied on each other. Now there are three less people to help out.

I'll be checking out unemployment on Monday. I've got the paperwork I need. I just need a couple of days to just... I don't know... digest.

Karen...I am so sorry. I can only imagine how difficult this must be since you loved the job and hold the people you worked for in such high esteem. Also, the care and concern you are showing for your co-workers speaks highly for what you have lost.

Your a incredible woman and so understanding of the situation. There is no doubt that this struggling company will be an awesome reference for you. Good luck .

Any chance the layoffs might just be temporary? I say have the nervous breakdown this weekend and get it out of the way. We've been there a couple times, too, over the years. I'll remember you in my prayers, kiddo. Hugs, Calen~

I know it's a cliche', but when one door closes, another one opens. Hopefully your door will lead to something even better.
