Happy August, A Big Anniversary Coming Up.

What a crazy 2nd half of July I had.

So, in my last blog, The Big Guy was recovering well, and I was working the program; tracking my meals, exercising at least 4 time a week. I had some momentum going. Well, since then, I have gone a little off course.

My left knee bothers me off and on, one of the reasons I stopped trying to run. I had been doing a couple of The Biggest Loser exercise DVD's for a change in my cardio and for strength training. Jillian has us doing a lot of movements that incorporate squats in one, and the other has that Blond trainer from I think season 3 or 4, and she has us doing a lot of leg work, too. Both are low to no impact, but my knees do feel a little creaky afterwards. The Big Guy has wanted to get a bike for a while. We have been on the lookout for something he could afford, and he saw one at Target. I went with him to check it out. He did get it, and we were headed out to the bus stop to come home. Now this was at 10pm, and when we stepped off the pavement onto the grassy border, I hit a hole. My body went one way and my knee went the other. I didn't fall, but I did feel a pull in my back and twist in my knee. By the middle of the next day, my back was fine, but my knee wasn't letting me do anything other than walk. If I tried go up or down the stairs, squat, or anything that required me to push off on it, the pain was bad. Since I COULD walk, I decided to go ahead and work my weekend, and go see the doctor on Monday. By Monday I was able to climb the stairs again, and doctor felt that it was just a strain, so give it a rest and time to heal.

Now, when I don't exercise regularly, I find it harder to commit to tracking my food. If I am not tracking my food, I don't pay attention what is going into my mouth. It isn't so much bad choices, as it is the amounts. We had a pancake breakfast at work on Sunday. I ate two pancakes, but then I kept picking at the fresh fruit that we had to go with it. I think I ate about 300-500 calories in fruit. (we had pineapple, bananas, honeydew, strawberries and blueberries) My total for breakfast was probably closer to 1000 calories than what I actually recorded. There was a lot of that kind of eating going on for the last couple of weeks. Plus, this past weekend we had the patient from HELL. Without violating confidentiality laws, I can say that the patient was constantly using the phone to call my desk, the food service department, and the hospital operator. The patient accused us of neglect, made unreasonable demands, and put staff safety at risk. The patient would call, I would start to get frustrated and angry, and then go in the lounge to try and cool off. Food that was out for all to eat was munched on to help me calm down.

Sunday, I took my bike to work for the first time in 2 weeks. My knee was finally feeling better, and I needed to start moving again. I was so ready to escape that day, (FB status update: It's not a good sign when you look at the clock and realize you've only been at work for 2 hours and have 8 more to go!!) I was also so ready to drown my sorrows in alcohol, (2nd FB status update: A little less than an hour and a half to go and then I can go home and let Mr. Jack Daniel's get me drunk!!!!! What a #?&*! day!). I do not drink very often, and I am not the type to turn to alcohol, I have too many family members who were alcoholics, but I really wanted to some. To help burn off some stress, I decided to ride my bike for an hour before getting on the bus and heading home. I figured that would get me to Pearlridge Shopping Center. The Bike path doesn't quite run parallel to the roads the bus travels. I got a little turned around when I got to Aloha Staduim, I wasn't sure how to proceed towards Aiea. I could have stopped there, but I hadn't hit the 60 minute mark. I finally figured it out, and by the time I got to Pearlridge, I had been riding for 75 minutes. I decided to keep going for another 15. I rode over 12 miles that day! I felt really proud of myself, and was more than happy with just 1 Jack and diet Coke. I have managed to ride at least 40 minutes every day since. I will go out when I am done with this blog, and I am aiming for 60 minutes.

So August is a big month for me this year. The Big Guy's Birthday is today. He wants to try a new Portuguese Restaurant, so we are going out tonight. My folks will be leaving on the 13th to spend 4 weeks with my sister and her family in Utah. Now for the big one; at the end of the month, I will have been tobacco free for 1 year! That is the longest I have managed to stay smoke free, without being pregnant, since I started smoking at age 14. Here's to a great August, working towards staying injury free, and getting The Big guy on his bike and riding with me!

    And I can totally relate to the not tracking food thing. Makes it so much "easier" to eat 'poorly' - either in quality or quantity, or both!
    But let's do our best and encourage each other this week, okay?
