The dreaded D word

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

No, I don't mean diet, I mean diabetes. My doctor called a couple of weeks ago to say my lab work showed early stages of the disease that my Mom has had for over 30 years. Type 2, adult onset. When I went in for a consultation with him, we agreed I would try diet and exercise to bring the numbers down and I have lost 5 pounds in the last 2 weeks. Great motivation, I'll say that.

Mo, I wondered which dreaded D word you were referring to and now I know. Are you aware that Spark People has a diabetes nutrition program and it not only helps with menus but in tracking your blood glucose as well? I'm with you in your fight. Hugs!!!

Keep that motivation high and you can beat it. Congratulations on the weight loss so far. Just keep eating healthy and get what exercise you can. I'm also pre-diabetic (Mom was Type 2). emoticon

Diabetes is a serious and terrible disease. It has a lot of press lately, and a lot of products that are heavily advertised, which makes it sound common and therefore not too big a deal. But it IS a big deal. Please don't make the mistake my husband did and wait for the stroke to get your attention.

That same motivation has worked for Joe, too. And the fear of that is working for me. We've found it's really not that hard to control through eating and daily monitoring. And it leads you to a really healthy diet!

Drug therapy has lots of unwelcome side effects. Food therapy has lots of very welcome side effects! Who knew? lol

    You'll do fine! Karen

I am also pre-diabetic. And I DO need to work on that as well. The weight loss challenge you monitor helps a lot.
