This week I completed the 12-week HM training program that I signed up for, my teammates are running Nike today and yesterday I did a training run at 13.2 miles. My first HM is in about a month so I have a few more weeks to "top off" my training; I plan a 14-miler in the next two weeks so I can go into my race feeling strong and confident about the distance.
As I look back on the training, I think I've learned a few things (it's all about discovering new aspects of ones' self, isn't it?):
1) training with a group beats going it alone
2) hills are hard, but i can get better at them
3) when the long runs get to over 10 miles, i need "cutback weeks"
4) running 4x/week is do-able with my schedule
I started out uncertain about running 13 miles (my previous longest distance was about 8 miles), now I wonder if I can race well :)
It seemed daunting at the start of the 12-week program (and even still halfway through); but just like life, taking it one step at a time got me to the result I wanted. As a bonus: I surprised myself and revealed a part of me that I like in the process...isn't that what it means to challenge yourself?
