Rejoicing Today

Had to worse scare EVER last night. Our Middle School Boys were playing in their last season game. They were playing Lexington and there they combine 8th & 9th graders to make 1 team. My son wasn't suppose to play due to his size (8th grd). He was very upset, but I told him just stick by the coach and see what happen. Again if you don't already know his position is Center. He weighs about 125lbs & is 5ft 2ins.. If you know anything about football OF COURSE they WILL put the BIGGEST nose guard against the offense line. Not to brag BUT my son has an amazing shot gun talent. The player that was suppose to take his spot kept rolling the ball on the ground to the quarterback...this was during warm up...next thing I see my son has the ball in his hand and they having him warming up. The coaches stacked the offensive line to help protect him with blocking. Most of the time he was on his own doing his very best to block the 9th grader that was twice my son's height. His shot guns were spot on to the QB. Our team was up 16 to ZERO and there was about 2 mins and something left in the 3rd qtr...when after a play my son was laying on the ground. Coaches attended to him, but he wasn't getting up. Finally they called my husband to the field...my heart sunk. I went to the end zone and waited. Then they called me to where everyone was at. The whole time walking out there my thoughts were good. I prayed and put my son in God's hands. His eye's were blood shot, so I knew he had a concussion. He was complaining that his neck & back was hurting. An ambulance was on it's way. With the suggestion of the coaches and refs he needed to go to the ER to get checked out. I rode in the ambulance with him and his blood pressure was high, but went down to normal after they put oxygen on him. He was scared and was hyper ventilating on the field. All his vital signs were good and his pain level was at 4 (1 being good...10 being the worse). When we got to the ER they were doing everything they needed to do to prep him for a CT Scan and Xrays. With a HUGE PRAISE THE LORD!!! The Power of Prayer is Amazing!! The doctor came in and said everything looked GREAT!!! He walked out of the hospital with a mild concussion and major whip lash type injury. No contact sports of any kind for 7 days. Very thankful to all our friend's and to our church family that prayed for him. I know it could have been alot worse. The head coach of our High School was at the game and actually following the ambulance to the hospital and waited with us. Our church Youth Pastor came and sat with us as well. With not having my parents around anymore it was very comforting to have them there.

Back to the football game...OUR TEAM WON!!! They ended the season 4 wins, 3 losses!! It's bitter sweet...next year our boy's will be Freshman's. Time is going by WAY to fast.

Bootcamp:
I know I haven't blogged about it in a while. BC is going GREAT!!! We are in our 9th week. Our running group is running for 28 mins straight. Our weigh ins are on Tuesday...last week I gained 1 pound. The week before last week I was extremely busy with working in our High School concession stand + Little League STUFF that there was times that I wouldn't drink all my water for the day or eat to my daily calories. We got home last night shortly after midnight, so with very little sleep I just went and weighed in this morning- came home and slept alittle more before having to get my youngest up for school...then I was off to work. I asked my bootcamp instructor to send me the workout for today, so I did it at 5pm tonight....BUT I got it in for today =) Oh forgot to tell you ...my weigh in this morning showed a 5.2 pound lose!! Woohoo!!! Gotta keep this train going!!! Only 5 weeks left.

My son is doing much better today, very sore - but getting by =)

I'm soooo glad your son is ok.

That being said, I'm gonna put something out there for you to think about... Contact sports, especially football and now soccer, are prone to injuries as you have already attested. Concussions and injuries to these young players bodies can have life long consquences. I would suggest that you speak to your pediatrian regarding this. Sometimes waiting until their bodies are fully matured is a better option. I know football is a great American passion, but at what expense? There's so many studies being conducted lately ~ it's really worth looking into.

When my 36 year old son was younger, he wanted to play football. I had enrolled him in a 24-hour school medical plan (single mom, 2 kids and was doing the best I could) and I noticed that the only injury NOT covered was football related. This sparked my interest, and I started educating myself as to why. Randy didn't like my decision, but luckily he found other sports to keep him busy - baseball, golf, soccer and basketball. One day, while he was a sophmore in HS, the football wound up on the soccer field, and he threw it back. That night, the coach was on the phone asking if Randy might want to join the team. At this stage of his life, I let him make the decision. He went on to quarterback during his junior and senior years. Last game of the season, he took a hard hit and wound up being airlifted to the hospital with a possible broken back. Thankfully, the xrays proved negative. Now he has two young sons of his own, and he's taking the same course - they gotta wait until they're 16.

BTW, Congrats on your success with boot camp!!! emoticon Good luck with the last 5 weeks...

Glad, glad, glad. First of all your son is doing better, that is tough having to go up against such a bigger opponent on the line. A little size advantage can be neutralized, but there are limits.

Also glad Bootcamp and the weight loss is there most importantly, keep up the great work. Hope you get some breaks in November for a while.
