After two years, I found my Spark!

Saturday, February 02, 2013

I was replying to a message on the Louisiana team page and realized that I was starting a blog in my reply. When I am passionate about a topic, the words come a flowing... As you embark on reading this blog, please beware - it's long, but it's heartfelt and true!

The thread asked people to post how long they had been member of the SparkPeople. I've been a member since January 2011. It's my two year anniversary, I guess! However, I've only found my Spark in the last month.... It's taken a while, but clearly, I wasn't ready then! I'm ready now though!

I've joined many programs from the ones that have you eating only their food to others that encourage you to come in, weigh in, and meet with members about our struggles and successes. Needless to say they didn't work because that's how I finally found my SparkPeople!

I joined SparkPeople when I started to anticipate a proposal from the wonderful man who is no my sweet husband. My goal was to lose weight for an upcoming wedding. He didn't propose until my birthday in June. Between January and June, SparkPeople was placed on the back burner. In fact, it was so far back, I think it fell off the range and was forgotten.

However, we were happily married in April 2012, and my husband and I immediately started working on a baby. More than anything, we want to be parents!! They say the trying is fun. I guess it is, until you start having miscarriages... We've endured three since May of last year. They've been difficult, but we both have strong rooted faith and know that things happen for a reason. And so, we keep trying... While my weight wasn't necessarily a root of my fertility troubles according to my doctor, it's clear that getting healthier couldn't hurt.

This New Year, after a lot of prayer and soul-searching I realized that I needed to do something for me, for my body, for my spirit and for the mommy that I know I will one day become! So January 3, 2013, I logged back in to SparkPeople and the rest has been history!

I've embraced all that the site has to offer and have opened myself up to learning from the coaches, experts, and from the members - YOU!!! I love the articles, health advice and nutritional education the site has given me.

When we lose weight we think of a magic number; sometimes that is the biggest hurdle we create for ourselves. It's like standing at the top of a skyscraper looking down at a number on the ground hundreds of feet below. You want it so bad, but you're understandably afraid to jump... But you shouldn't jump! That'd be be unsafe and just plain CRAZY! Instead you should find the stairs and go down one flight at a time, slowly building endurance and gradually making your way to the ground floor!

I haven't focused on my final goal weight. According to SparkPeople, I'll get there in June. It's February for crying out loud! I need to focus on today and this week! Concentrating on today has allowed me to focus on making healthier lifestyle changes. In the process, the number on the scale has taken care of itself. It's slowly going down because I am finally focusing on the important parts of my becoming a healthier woman! Clearly, SparkPeople has taught me what I was so desperate to learn from other "diet" programs.

So, long story short... It took me two long years to find my spark. It took two years, but I DID find my Spark! And, just like a shooting star, this spark is streaking and streaming through my life!!!

Finding your Spark is a journey. I bought the book in 2011 and read through most of it. Been a member off and on since 2008. It took me until this past Christmas to find my spark. I am happy that I did. Because now I know that I am doing this for me and not to make others in my family happy. To be honest I think my parents would be happier if I stayed fat. Because they are. My husband and my kids love me no matter what. I want to be able to keep up with them and support them in all that they do. Right now I can't but I am working toward that.
    Happy for you.
Best of luck on your journey.
