remember that winter I was insanely in shape?

Monday, February 04, 2013

yeah, it's not this winter. It was a couple years ago, actually. For once I came out of winter in better shape than when it started, and I think a big part of that was getting my butt to the gym for a VARIETY of activities on a REGULAR basis. For instance, I would, every week, take a bodypump class, a turbokick class, a yoga class, and then also do a couple random cardio sessions (elliptical or treadmill or whatever).

The reason I know I was in better shape, you might ask? I re-geared my bike in the fall and added a larger chainring so I'd have higher gears. In the fall, I NEVER used the big chainring, even if I was sailing downhill. That spring, I was in it all the stinking time! It was grand!

After a loooooong slackitude, I'm getting back into group classes. I think I'm much more motivated to work out when there's a ton of positive energy in the same room (and let's face it, the cardio room at the Ys is more of the "you ignore me, I'll ignore you, and we'll get along just fine" vibe than "how can you not have fun flailing around here with everyone else having fun"). So I found a really fun Monday night turbokick class, and I recently discovered a really good yoga teacher is back teaching again at the Y across the road from work. And I found a couple mildly convenient bodypump times and actually went last Friday (for the first time in aaaaages). I'm still wicked sore from that, for the record.

But I think my focus for this winter is to come out of it in better shape than I went in (let's face it, the bar is pretty low there).

I also think I want to start tracking measurements again (still on a break from the scale, though I did hop on this morning to discover I've gained 2.1 pounds since November...considering the holidays were thrown in there, and a superbowl party was lunch & dinner yesterday, I'd say that's not too shabby...I'd prefer a solid loss, of course, but I'm not too upset!). But I think measurements might be fun to keep tabs on and will give me some measure of progress that is not as volatile as the scale.
