Woo Hoo, saw a new bird

Saturday, June 08, 2013

Sarge and I drove out to Leona Valley, and stopped at the famous Hawk Tree. No Hawk, but I saw Orioles flying about.

This one was shy.

I saw a bird fly into one of the trees. It was a ways from where I was standing. After I took the picture I realized it was a Phainopepla. Apparently they are in our area year round, but this is only the 2nd time I have seen this bird. The first time was at Elizabeth Lake. I will have a link at the end of my blog so you can read about the bird. They really are pretty.

Across the street is the Cherry Farm.

And the Farmer working his land.

I drove down to check on the Raven nest, but Mama must have been off looking for food, so I drove further down the road to another tree. At first I thought I was looking at a Raven. After I took the picture I realized it was a very young Red Tail Hawk. Woo Hoo. More Hawks in our area.

I was pulling into the driveway, and noticed a Dove having a snack on the little table DH made. I took the pictures from inside the car.

I decided to check on our Veggie Garden. It's looking pretty good.
Sunflowers and Corn.

Bell Peppers

Backyard Finches

Really lovely bird - love the crest on the head. Thanks so much for sharing all these lovely critters with us - and big pats for all the dogs.

Another great picture blog, thanks for always sharing with us.

I have both a hawk nest and owl nest in the two giant palm trees just 20 feet from my front door and would love to show pictures but I have a crummy camera. However, I came home the other day to find a juvenile hawk, sitting on my air conditioner that sticks out the front window. He appeared stunned and confused and I was able to walk right past him, only 2.5 feet away. He did keep an eye on me however. I managed to get a few pictures with my cell phone, but have no idea how to transfer them to my computer.

The palm tree is littered at the bottom, with owl pellets and I found a clean entire skull of a unknown rodent that I plan to bleach. So cool!

Was the table built just for the birds or did your DH build it for people and the birds like to share? LOL!

The Phainopepla has cute feathers on its head (looked it up). AND in Fort Lauderdale, where I used to live (I am NW of there about 25 minutes now), there were a lot of doves and I don't see them near when I live now. Now I have the ducks and egrets. Fun!! Thanks for sharing and have a wonderful day. Give my love to Sarge. emoticon emoticon

We have lots of Orioles at our yard - they love the hummingbird feeders! And I must say, the hawks love the finches in our yard, too! Even though it's Nature's way, it's a little disconcerting to be sitting in the yard and watch a hawk swoop down and pluck a finch off the feeder. So we moved the feeders more into the trees so the little birds aren't sitting ducks for the hawk - he will just have to work a bit harder for his next meal!

That Red Tailed Hawk look like he / she has been in a great battle.

I have never heard of the Phainopepla (spell checker doesn't like that)

    Nice and active Finches.

I had a Jackdaw in the garden yesterday but sadly no time to to get the camera.

    Have a good week Jeanne

I do love Orioles, haven't seen any lately. I have not seen the Phainopepla either, I will look though.
Great Cherry Farm. Is there anything they put on there trees to keep the cherries? All of my cherries were eaten, even before they were ripe. I have 7 cherry trees and I give up on ever having cherries, I am so frustrated about that.
Your tomatoes and peppers look very healthy. I also have my corn growing with my sunflowers.

NO frost now, MIchiganders have just planted gardens. Only have from now until September,, then snow.. short season, long appetites!

That bird looks identical to a cardinal--only black.. different calls though.

as always, I appreciate all the pics......but an oriole! I have never seen one and this one looked different that what I expected, so I guess I have never paid much attention if/when I ever saw a pic of one.....I guess I expected them to look like larger versions of the gold finches we have here

Thanks for the link to the Audubon site. It is always fun to learn about new birds that live outside of my area. Our orioles look different from yours - such beautiful flashes of orange in the trees. Garden is looking great!
