Doin' the Double

Saturday, August 03, 2013

Call it midsummer blahs, post-vacation letdown or temporary insanity, but I've signed up for a DOUBLE road race at the end of this month. That's right, that's a 10k at 7:30, followed by a 5k at 9:15...for me that means 45 minutes of "rest" in-between. Or maybe it's an interrupted 9-miler.

I'm not ready to start HM training (my race is in mid-November) but I found myself needing a challenge so I did this to myself to keep a near-term motivating event in front of me...I seem to need that.

So now I'm experimenting with paces (how fast can I run the 5k?), warmup duration and timing (running stiff is not fun!), nutrition (hydration is a given, but how much food can I tolerate?) and even shoe-selection. I'm planning to change all my clothes in the break (goodbye, sweaty bra!) to give myself a mental lift, but changing shoes still feels a bit weird...

It's kooky, but I'm having fun with it.

Enjoy! Sounds like a great challenge. I did two 5Ks in one day in March, and ONEKIDSMOM is doing a double half mary (half marathons two days in a row) soon. Having a challenge keeps us going. Enjoy!!

Those double races are challenging, especially in summer heat. Good luck.

I will never forget my first double. I was new to running and did not eat or drink between a 2 miler and the 2nd race, a 10K. My 10k pace and energy level both collapsed. Still, I finished. Good to see you are a better planner than I was!

edit: I went full out for the first race, the 2 miler, and was rewarded with a 1st place in my AG. So, I was already burned out for the 10K. You might want to take it easy on your 10K so you're not too burned out for your 5K.

I totally know what you mean about the summer blues. This will give you something to get you through the summer. Good luck with this challenge! Can't wait to read about it.
