An exciting , work filled day on this end..

It seems fall canning and entertaining gets in the way of my good intentions.
Today I am canning..apple pie filling and starting a zucchini relish to can tomorrow..as the chopped zucchini has to set overnight night in the fridge to "work" before I mix and put into jars..etc.
I have fed three different families this week..Not complaining in the least..but I am out of practice feeding alot of people often. I am getting lazy in my old age it would seem.
We have cleaned out one side of the garden as the weather has turned colder. It was down to 32* here this morning..the one side of the garden we want to keep producing..(it has winter squash not yet mature and raspberries that are producing..). The other side of the garden we have gleaned..Gosh so many green tomatoes..Four, 5 gallon buckets full. I am taking one bucket to my daughter. Another one I will give away..the other two..we will let ripen to eat fresh as the weeks pass. Also,,many green pumpkins..What in the world does a person do with green pumpkins..A friend wanted a few..so she took 10 last night..if nothing else they will be good for fall decorations..I am hoping what we have left..later in the winter...the chickens may think they look pretty good and eat them, after they are chopped up.
One lone zucchini in the refrigerator..and lots of cukes. The Lord has blessed mightily.
It has been a strange garden year. All the large fruit trees didn't produce. They got a killing freeze at a crucial time in the early spring. Everything else got a real late start..But I am thankful for what we did get.
I have had the fortitude to eat good today..and my plan is later in the day, after the canning is done..to ride the recumbent bike.
I best get..the water is boiling waiting for me to blanch the apples..Hope all your day is going well and that you are enjoying this fall weather..it is welcome on this end..after such a HOT summer.

Sounds wonderful! And I don't think "lazy" is an adjective I'd apply to you!!

I can remember my grandfather's small garden (we're cityfolk) -- every year around this time, he wrapped green tomatoes in newspaper and put them in a cool place so that we could enjoy homegrown tomatoes for Christmas dinner.

One year, I froze peaches, and made a peach pie for Christmas day!

I haven't canned in a few years, and, frankly, I miss it. There's nothing like seeing the rows of filled jars, and knowing that there's a bit of summer waiting to be enjoyed when the snow flies.
