Miles and Fitness Goals

Tuesday, January 14, 2014

Last year, my goal was to walk 1,000 miles. My "official" mileage was 975, although, there were a few days I forgot my tracker and I started the goal in the 3rd week of January so I very likely hit the 1,000 mark if just barely.

This year, my official goal is to surpass last year's mileage, but my stretch goal is to walk 1,500 miles. I also added the goal of getting in 2500 fitness minutes every month. I achieved this 2 months last year but I'm more "into" walking this year than I've ever been before and it started last year.

I love walking outdoors, but that isn't always convenient so I found a treadmill on Craigslist for $100. It's older in years, but practically brand new in use. It folds so takes up very little room in the bedroom. I put it down to use it and then put it right back up again. I've used it 3x since I bought it, 6 days ago.

This morning, I was up an hour early (4:30am). I got dressed for the workout and started the laundry. Then I speed-walked for ~45 minutes while watching one of my shows that no one else in the house cares for (Parenthood). Hubby leaves for work around 4:30 so he wasn't there to bug me. Kids were in bed so they didn't bug me. It was BLISS!

When the show went off, it was time to wake the kids. I started the shower so it could warm up (our bathroom is furthest from the water heater), woke the kids, let the dogs out and checked on the laundry (it still had 8 minutes left). I yelled at the kids again to get up and took my shower. 15 minutes later, wrapped in a robe, I again yell at the kids to get ready, let the dogs back in the house, and change the laundry.

From there, the morning commenced as it usually does with me in the bathroom, getting ready and periodically coming out to yell at the kids to GET READY. "Quit sitting in the floor, you don't have time for that. Brush your teeth, floss and rinse. Did you make your lunch last night? I didn't think so. Hurry up! Don't forget your breakfast."

We managed to get out of the house on time, with everything done and I feel especially energized and accomplished.

Ironically, if I wake them late and tell them we're late, they can get ready and be out the door in 20 minutes but if we have an hour (50 minutes, most days), they will run behind.

Hopeful - you make me laugh. "uhmmm let me see yell at the kids and oh what was that yell at the kids.uhm". LOL! Every stinkin' morning! You know they know the routine - it doesn't change - but they can't move unless I'm standing over them or yelling. They're 15, 10 and 6....plenty old enough to do all of this without one word from Mom. I share these stories with my parents and Mom nods and smiles. Dad looks all upset and suggests I'm not hard enough on them because they should do what they're told the 1st time I tell them. Mom just looks at him and rolls her eyes while shaking her head. She was the one yelling at us to get ready every morning while Dad was already at work, blissfully unaware of what it takes to get a houseful of kids ready and out the door. I love my family and it was a great morning overall, despite the yelling.
