Shifting My Focus

This past week was a tough one for me. I was exhausted for most of it, which generally makes me more emotional and more likely to overeat. I had to decline a project, and saying no makes me extremely anxious –combine that with feeling exhausted and I end up unable to hold back tears and crying in front of whomever I happen to be interacting with! The Personal Power program had some really good points that, had I applied them, would have helped me this week, but in this instance exhaustion won.

I am feeling better today and taking advantage of the energy to think of what happened this week, reflect on some of the concepts covered by Personal Power over the last few days, and strategize how I can win next time exhaustion and crankiness come at me. One of the key topics on PP was the power of focus, which also relates to my last entry.

Robbins proposes that by changing our focus we can change the way we feel and challenges us to control self-talk and replace what he calls “limiting ‘endless loop’ questions” (i.e. why does this always to me?) with questions that empower us (i.e. what can I learn from this?). As an assignment to help create a shift, he suggests developing five empowering questions to ask ourselves every morning for the rest of the program. I wrote the questions on a piece of paper and put them in my kitchen so I can see them and reflect on them when I make breakfast in the morning (or when I’m tempted to eat at other times). The first question on my list was, “What am I grateful for in my life now?” I focus so much on my past and on the mistakes I’ve made (often ignoring many of the blessings I have now) that it’s no wonder I have no attention/energy left to deal with my present! W. Mitchell said, “You have a lot to look forward to, if you keep looking forward!” and I think I need to start using that as mantra. Below are links to some of W.
