Giving up diet soda pays for my gym

I gave up diet soda a few months ago because I found myself drinking it without thinking. Some days I drank a 2 liter bottle or close to it. I also have some insomnia problems that probably were made worse by the caffeine in diet cola.
The other day I was thinking over our family budget and thought since I am actively using my gym 5 days a week, then the cost was justified. It helps me lose weight and deal with stress. Then I thought about it more and realized that giving up diet soda at about the same time I joined the gym was probably great timing. I probably spent more in a month on diet soda (either 2 liters for at home or drinks in a restaurant) than I spend on my gym membership. A 2 liter costs around $1.50 to $2 and a restaurant drink about the same, if not more. So if I no longer buy five drinks or bottles a week, I'm saving $10. In a month, that adds up to $40 and my gym only costs $33.
So making small trade offs can make a big difference. I believe I'm better off without diet soda and it also made joining the gym not raise my monthly expenses.
