Giving up diet soda pays for my gym

Saturday, May 31, 2014

I gave up diet soda a few months ago because I found myself drinking it without thinking. Some days I drank a 2 liter bottle or close to it. I also have some insomnia problems that probably were made worse by the caffeine in diet cola.

The other day I was thinking over our family budget and thought since I am actively using my gym 5 days a week, then the cost was justified. It helps me lose weight and deal with stress. Then I thought about it more and realized that giving up diet soda at about the same time I joined the gym was probably great timing. I probably spent more in a month on diet soda (either 2 liters for at home or drinks in a restaurant) than I spend on my gym membership. A 2 liter costs around $1.50 to $2 and a restaurant drink about the same, if not more. So if I no longer buy five drinks or bottles a week, I'm saving $10. In a month, that adds up to $40 and my gym only costs $33.

So making small trade offs can make a big difference. I believe I'm better off without diet soda and it also made joining the gym not raise my monthly expenses.

Way to go! In this economy where the is carbonation and caffeine everywhere and cheaper that other drinks its amazing to see someone overcome that and put it towards a good use. I am down to drinking one can of Dr. Pepper per week and its helping a lot. I keep working out and i can see the improvements and its helping everything in my life. Another issue i want to get rolling is since soda is around $1.50 and juice drinks are around $2 its ridiculous. If juices and other healthier drinks were cheaper than America would be in better physical condition. But no we are killing ourselves by the drinks and products we put out on the market that are available everywhere and making healthier drinks and food more expensive.

Great job! You made me think that if I would do the same thing with chocolate then I could afford the treadmill I want. emoticon

Awesome thinking and a great trade off. I try to limit my diet sodas but haven't given them up yet. I get cans of lemon lime seltzer which seems to satisfy my carbonation craving, but isn't as bad as soda. Somewhere down the line I'll try giving up the carbonated drinks altogether. It's great that you have done it.
