Two Weeks and Yet Another Good Start
Thursday, June 19, 2014
It's been two weeks since I started the South Beach Gluten Free Phase I diet. I gave myself two days after I returned from my trip to Rome, then started. I have lost 3 1/2 pounds in 2 weeks. Not bad for me...a 61 year old short (I'm 5 ft 3) female with slightly less that 20 pounds to lose.
South Beach has worked for me before. I'm following the gluten free version this time because gluten is not a friend of mine. I've been mostly faithful to the plan. Eating eggs for breakfast. Trying to make them interesting is an ongoing challenge. This morning I had a 2 egg omelet with light mozarella cheese and some Dungeness crab, half a tomato and a quarter of an avocado. Yum.
I'm gradually introducing complex carbs (starches and fruit) into my meals over the next two weeks...and plan to carefully monitor how my body reacts to more sugar and starches. 1 of each per day for the first week. We'll see. I'm very interested in what happens. But for me, I've been wanting to add two things: carrots and that glass of wine for dinner. So those will be my extra carbs today.
These may sound silly. But if you enjoy eating carrots as I do and that glass of wine...well....that's my plan for today and I'm sticking to it. Tomorrow? Well I think I'll try some brown rice and another glass of wine. Saturday? Since it is my long run day (if I am over my cold I'll try for 10 miles) I'll let myself have that banana and yogurt for breakfast and a NuGo bar and some chocolate soy milk for a recovery drink (as well as Gu to fuel me during my run). I'll let you know how it goes. Hopefully these additions won't trigger a lot of food cravings or slow my weight loss.
I went off strict South Beach two times over the past two weeks: on the evening of my wedding anniversary and on the day of my long run (9 miles last Saturday). Those days I didn't lose weight. But I didn't gain much, if any, either. So I'm OK with that.
Here's to continuing with the plan!
