The Biggest Loser

Saturday, September 20, 2014

My roommate and I love competitive reality tv shows and recently started watching the newest season of The Biggest Loser. I love the dynamic of having Dolvett, Jen, and Jessie as the main trainers now as I feel that all three try to tap into the emotional reason behind the contestants' weight gain. I really do believe that a good portion of the growing obesity epidemic is due to emotional turmoil sitting beneath the surface.

Eleven years ago my oldest brother, then 26, died of complications due to obesity. It was partially negligence on the side of the hospital but also negligence on our side as we never pushed him to face his inner demons and find some release or peace of any sort. We all just tolerated our own dysfunctional relationships and ignored the fact that every single person in our household was 50 or more pounds overweight. My brother at that time was around 500 pounds. When he passed away, many of us still remained in denial and blamed each other instead of coming together.

There's a contestant on the show named Rob. He's on the red team with Dolvett and also started the show a little under 500 pounds. He already had one foot in the grave essentially but has been doing some amazing work to make sure he lives to see the age of 30! I love cheering for him during the challenges because I feel like through him, I'm able to lend the support that I wish I had been able to lend to my brother at that time. Rob has already lost 45 pounds and I couldn't be prouder of him and the positive changes he's making in his life!

I wish that my brother had had the chance to make some positive changes in his life as well. Whenever I wake up, I give God thanks for another day of life. In four months, I'll be 27 and would have outlived my brother who to this day continues to inspire me. I was able to go from a 270 pound 15 year old to a 159 pound 24 year old. I'm currently 195 pounds but I'm working hard to get back to where I need to be because I want to live! I want to accomplish my goals and have a family. I want to be able to play with my children and my grandchildren. I want to climb mountains and do cartwheels and enjoy everything that God has given me. Onwards!

If you don't watch The Biggest Loser, its on on Thursday nights on NBC.

I think that the wonders of how your brother motivates you today is far beyond what words could say.
