SP - Help wanted!

Over the past month, I have been trying to get myself to be more active than what I have been over the last few years. One of the ways I intended to do this was to reintroduce the winter sports I enjoyed when living in Northern Ontario - namely cross country skiing and snow shoeing. Almost three years ago now, you would find me cross country skiing a minimum of 8 km at least 4 times a week and snow shoeing a little more sporadically than that but still doing it nonetheless.

Since moving to Southern Ontario, where snow isn't typically in abundance in my area, it has become difficult to keep myself busy and active. I've always struggled with gyms and indoor exercise - I guess its always felt like I wasn't going anywhere in particular which for me feels like I'm not achieving something. I think that's why I've always enjoyed outdoor activities more because there's a start and an end but the path in between is always changing.

This year, I have found more snow than usual, but it didn't enable cross-country skiing until about a month ago. I leapt to the chance, and have found myself going almost every weekend. I've managed to average almost 3 hrs every trip, which results in a phenomenal workout and ample calories burned. Unfortunately, going in the evenings after work isn't an option, because there isn't a spot that has lit up trails close to me - or at least that I know of anyways.

I tend to have my weekends down for activity, but I'm really struggling during the week to keep myself motivated and getting in some fitness. I would really appreciate any suggestions, tips, or ways of motivating oneself related to getting into a fitness regime. Can you help?

I had the same problem as you. It is so hard to motivate myself when I am not interested in the workout.

What I found I had to do was really lock in on the whole idea of a streak. I like working out in fitness classes. The only time I can really go to the gym is at 6 am on weekdays. Most of the time I make it in time for the class, but there have been a few times that I was late and could not join in (no moving equipment while class is in session).

I dislike treadmills and elliptical machines. I hiss at them in my head. However, because of my goal and streak I have jumped on the closest machine and work it out until the class is over. I get to hear the music, hear the instructor encouraging the class, and just use it to make it through my own workout.

I hope you find something that inspires you.

Here are a link that might help.

Creating your own customized workouts can keep you motivated because you choose exercises that you enjoy and that will keep you feeling accomplished! And start small!
Even a short 15 minutes of work with weights can do your body good!
Even try bodyweight exercises! emoticon No equipment required, easy to do at home and you can jump right into the shower after you are done! No time wasted!

I personally like to do circuits of body weight exercises, with some plyometrics mixed in for variety, depending on how I feel that day!!! If you want any help starting something, let me know!!!

I'd gladly help you get started!!! emoticon

Hi! I used to be the same way. I couldn't even imagine getting on a treadmill! I thought it was boring like I wasn't getting anywhere lol. I had a job that was high physical labor so in winter I didn't have to worry about exercising outside as it was so cold in North Dakota. Then in the summer I could exercise outdoors. I like the long walks cuz I could plan a route and see things and feel and smell the fresh air. I had a nice new treadmill for a year before I chose to finally use it.

Now I have gotten in touch with my inner treadmill lol. I think it's fun and can mix up the speed and incline and I jam out to all kinds of great music. I also keep track of my miles and put them in my weight loss journal on a page that I put a map for a real hiking trail I wanna go hike this summer and Fall. When I finish all the miles I get to go do a hike on that trail. You could pick a trail or a location somewhere and do the same. Like pick a town or a place you wanna see. When you are done virtually walking there, you could then take a trip there.

Gyms are great too because you can mix it up with all the equipment. So 20 minutes on the bike then 20 on treadmill and elliptical.

I also use exercise videos. I am finally all set up to use them starting this week. I rotate them to stay active, change things up and not get bored. So many great ones out there that really work great. And for some videos it's a challenge to see if you can do more of the video each time or make your moves stronger or use heavier weights etc. most are only around ten bucks too so you aren't out a lot of money.

Hope you find some great ways to fit the exercise in during the week and stay motivated! I love having you as a spark buddy!
