3rd Blog: Re-Entering the World of Work

Friday, May 01, 2015

I had a job once, when I was 12-13. It was a dishwashing job at a bar and grill restaurant. I didn't hate it totally; I made decent money for my age and it got me out of the house of horrors 3-5 times a week. I've tried ever since then to get a job, I didn't care where, I applied at dozens of places, in different places that I lived. All to no avail. Not saying I didn't get called for interviews. Trust me, I did. But out of the dozen interviews I got called to, my mom only allowed me to go to 3-4. WHICH IS TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE! She refused me to allow to go to several of the BEST jobs I could get. I couldn't tell you why, I could only give you theories. And before you start on the whole "you need to do it yourself" stuff, don't. I do not have a car and do not have a license. I have a beginners and my mom won't teach me how to drive. And as you know, I tried for jobs to pay for drivers ed but that's just a vicious cycle. Most jobs I can apply to are 30 minutes away in the city. I also live in a mostly french town, and I am very English. BUT: I recently got an offer with a family friend to work at the fish plant with her. At first I was hesitant; its worse than working at mcdonalds! But then I realized, I'm not getting any younger, and better jobs aren't just going to drop into my lap. I get paid weekly after the initial 2 weeks at a rate of 15$+ an hour. For 5-7 days a week. 8-5pm. I guess I'm nervous, but I know after the first week of being on my feet, I'm sure I'll get used to it. I'll be working with crab and lobster and there's "bonus tables" where I can earn an extra 100$+ per week. This is the best shot I have at getting out of my situation and into the world. I'll be sure to blog after my first week, haha I'm sure I'll have plenty to complain about. :)

Well get to work.. It is the most wonderful thing to get a paycheck and you made the money.. That is a lot more than when I first started working.. and even more than I made as a Teacher.. so be thankful.. I had to get a degree to make almost 10 hr.. but I did work at a Deli at a Supermarket and made almost 15 a hour before it closed.. I even got a raise for kicking out the owner,, He tried to come behind the counter and I told him to get back in the back of the line and I would get to him as fast as I could that there was four people in front of him.. He started to say something and I said I am not going to loose my job over you so please get to the back of the line.. He left and went to the Manager and then he introduced me to him.. I said I was sorry but I didn't know who you were and I wanted my job.. I thought well this is not going to turn out well.. but he gave me a .75 raise.. I said thank you and I told him next time just write it down and I would get it for him as soon as I could and it would be ready..So go for it every little thing you do is a experience and keep it down date started and date end and why.. then you can build a resume.. Good going and get to work on time.. In His Love and Grace Just Me Jane emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Is it possible that you might try school again? Education can give you tons of experience for the outside world. I am so sorry you have such a limited life right now. I do hope you get a job soon.

Congrats on the new job! I only have a learner's permit (which I don't know if it's similar to a beginners), and I'm quite a bit older than you so definitely understand that part. Sorry your mom wasn't supportive of you but after you've been working a while, and get your driver's license and possibly a used car, you will be able to get a better job... provided you don't like the one you're about to start. I have no idea how a job like that is, but you might end up enjoying it.
