Contemplating Hunger: Think Before You Stuff

Sunday, July 05, 2015

I've recently been thinking about what I've learned on my 2+ month SparkPeople journey, and one thing that first came to mind is the fact that I now *think* more before/while I eat. Throughout my 36 years, I've never really thought very much while eating - food is put in front of me, I eat it. Small portion, large portion, I've never been too picky, haha.

But now, after opening up my SP account, I have a calorie range, and have worked on retraining my brain when it comes to food. I was at a restaurant the other night, and this is how my thought process worked while eating my meal:

*enjoying grilled BBQ chicken salad*
*looks down at plate, sees 1/3 of salad has been eaten*
*gazes off into the distance, thinking, 'Hmmm, how do I feel? Am I full? Do I need to eat a little more?'*
*decide I'm done eating, and asks server for a to-go box*

This thought process would have NEVER happened before I found SP. Now that I focus on this topic when presented with larger-than-normal amounts of food, I believe it has really helped with my weight loss efforts. I also employ this method of thinking when I find myself wandering into the kitchen to see what's in the fridge - am I really hungry? If I'm not hungry, I grab a piece of gum, and my water bottle, and I'm good.

So, the moral of my story is this: if you're in a situation where food is presented in larger-than-normal amounts, try to take 1 itty bitty moment to THINK - if you're actually hungry, take a portion, and if you're not, walk away.

I'm excited to see how my journey goes while on SP - in 2 months, I've lost 18lbs, and I'm confident the scale will show additional pounds lost when I do my monthly weigh-in at the end of July.

I hope all of you Sparkers have a fantastic week!

emoticon I am one who loves food. I love my favs and always will be my favs that is the good thing. We can eat what we want but yes we just got to potion control. Now I always bring home left overs when we maybe go out to eat. I get to eat it next day emoticon . It does get easier cause as you stomach shrinks there will be no having to think about it cause you will be so stuffed from just eating a little but still enjoying the bite or 3 bites you took. This Journey is great. Enjoy your journey and embrace it. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

emoticon emoticon That thought process can be hard to train our brains after so long of not doing so. It is funny to think about how far we've come and make those types of realizations!
