Not All Reasons are 'Good' Ones

At some point in time we all make one of those little lists of reasons why we want to lose weight. You know, why we're here on this site. A lot of those are sunshine and rainbows and inspirational posters and whatnot. But I think not all of those reasons we list for ourselves are 'good' reasons. And you know what? That's okay. We're all humans--nice, horrible, flawed humans. It's okay to have selfish motivations for taking better care of yourself. Maybe you don't have three kids you want to be there for, or health issues you're trying to fix. If it's just you wanting to wow people at your 20 year high school reunion, that's okay too. Really!
Sure, some of my reasons for wanting to lose weight and get in shape are normal. I want to improve my health, I want to feel less crappy, I want to be able to jog without duct taping my boobs down. But, not all of my reasons are so... normal.

Here are some of my weirder/possibly spiteful reasons for losing weight:
-- I feel bad for my little fat Mii. I use the Wii U fit program, and I feel so bad for my fat little Mii. Sure, she's happy and all, but I think she'd be happier if she was less... oval-shaped.
-- For once in my life, I'm not the 'fatter sister'.
-- Maybe to spite my mother a little bit. Just a little. I enjoy watching her squirm emotionally when I talk about my weight loss. (I love my mother and my sister, but I've been on the bad end of the spectrum a long time.)
-- I want to be one of those inspirational stories. I want the headline to be 'even cranky, lazy people can lose weight!'. Yeah. That's the ticket.
-- I've been fat pretty much since middle school, so I don't have that 'I want to look like I did in high school/want to wear those old jeans' mentality. But it sure would be kind of sweet to go to my 20 year high school reunion in like.. three years (eek) and have people be just a little impressed.

So... no, not the best reasons out there, but for me they are still valid motivations. Okay, so maybe I'm not the nicest person out there. But I'm gonna be real, gonna put them out there.

Whatever motivation you can find, embrace it. Even if it's a little petty.

    Yeah, I think those are totally normal, healthy reasons, especially since you're acknowledging them! It's those "hidden agendas" that get us every time.

    I will say this about "losing for an event" goals in general, though. There is no such thing as "maintenance". Whatever you do to lose weight has to be something that you can sustain for life. So when you set out to be a certain weight for a wedding or a reunion your subconscious mind has already heard that it's a temporary thing with an endpoint. That's one reason why it's so easy to fall immediately back into old patterns and regain all the losses. What we tell ourselves between the lines has a lot of power!
