Fantabulous year 2016

Friday, December 30, 2016

Right now it seems as though everyone I know is moaning about how horrible 2016 has been and eagerly anticipating 2017... Carrie Fisher died! We elected Trump! Morley Safer and Gwen Ifel are gone!

But seriously, I've had a fantabulous year....

Started in January with cataract surgery. While I still need cheaters and the computer is iffy, I am basically NOT wearing glasses for the first time in 50 years! Hip, hip hurray!

February we had a pipe burst and endured 6-weeks of house disruption. While that doesn't sound like something to cheer about, it did mean that we got new hardwood floors and insurance paid for repainting 3 rooms I had planned to repaint before we put the house on the market. And, fortunately, I had NOT gone to NYC with my husband as usual, so I was home when it happened - we wouldn't have had a house left if the water had run for 3 days instead of half hour or so.

In May my son and his wife delivered our first Grandbaby... Eloise Elizabeth - the most perfect blond, blue-eyed happy baby ever seen.

In June a weeks vacation exploring Gettysburg and visiting our daughter in South Carolina - including an afternoon floating down a gentle river in inner tubes.

In July a wonderful 2-week vacation in Scotland and northern England. Alas, my sister-in-law did not come as planned, but my daughter changed her plans and was able to come for the whole trip instead of just one week. We explored Inverness and Edinburgh, then hiked the 85 miles of Hadrian's Wall together. It was hard, it was beautiful, and although I was tired and sore when done, I would do it again.

October was my daughter's wedding. Despite it being the same weekend as Hurricane Matthew, everything worked out just fine, and the wedding was beautiful and joyful.

And in December I turned 60. We've planned a big trip to Europe next fall to celebrate my husbands retirement and my landmark birthday. So, while I have mixed emotions about landmark birthdays, it's all been good.

New Year's Resolution
When I hit the last landmark, I decided that while I didn't know what the future looked like, I wanted to meet it in the best physical shape I could. Since going through menopause I've slacked off on exercise and healthy eating, and while in good shape, am not in GREAT shape (ie I've been in better shape before and want to be there again!) But I'm sick of tracking food, miles, etc. And part of the 'good life' is enjoying food, wine and chocolate! I looked back over my diaries and am shocked at how much energy and stress and angst I spent on tiny weight changes.... not going to do that anymore.

So I'm trying to frame this in as positive a way as possible....

In 2017 I'm embracing the healthy lifestyle in food and exercise, and mental positive outlook and find balance between discipline and indulgence.

Happy New Year!
