The New Smoking?

I just read an article from our small town newspaper that was really scary and an eye opener. The title was "Chronic Sitting May be as Deadly as Smoking". It is being called "The New Smoking" because it can cause some of the same issues as smoking. Even though we may get an hour a day of exercise, sitting throughout the rest of the day can cause some very serious health issues. Research has shown that sitting too much is associated with "increased risk of mortality from heart disease, cancer and diabetes- regardless of whether you exercise regularly." . It is not just those who work at a desk. Just think of all the other times we are sitting-driving, watching TV, or surfing the net. I for one am planning ways to keep from sitting so much. A standing desk sounds like a good first step. I also have a small timer which I can set to make sure to get up more often. Maybe we need a good scare occasionally.
