What is it about those numbers?

Tuesday, February 28, 2017

There is something so seductive about watching the numbers on the scale go down. But what is it? Why is it so powerful? For me, physical activity has always been a challenge. I grew up as a fairly sedentary kid from a pretty sedentary family. So, those numbers on the scale provide reassurance that my suffering is not in vain...there are "results" right before my eyes! So, what about the times when those numbers don't budge, or, God forbid, go up? What did I do wrong? What most recent food item can I look back on with guilt and anger? Damn you, fudge cake! You weren't even that great! How can I stop being pushed around by those numbers? How can I keep my focus on the process of being healthy, and making healthy choices, when the alluring appeal of smaller numbers will always be there?

I tend to go more on other things like how my clothes are fitting, how much I can lift, etc, Its too easy to get caught up on the scale when there are so many variables( am I retainig water/ am I building muscle as I am trying to lose etc).

Make a focus on increasing other numbers - SPARK STREAKS -

    Seven Days of Drinking water...
Seven Days of walking for 10 minutes

maybe then 30 days of walking 10 minutes... then 7 days of walking 15 minutes at a time... work those numbers up every so often and click on their goal tally on the SparkPage. SparkPeople will send you SparkStreak "awards" in email (if you have it set up that way in your email preferences.)

One hundred Days of drinking water...

There are several here on SparkPeople who have set increasing streaks for daily login and blogging - I'll have to think of their names...

These will give you some ideas, hopefully!!

And some like to track non-scale victories like inches lost, fitting into smaller clothes, etc. Just have to find the numbers that interest you and re-frame it to a direction you can see yourself going!

I have the same numbers/scale addiction but I'm finding more satisfaction in the non-scale victories more and more.
