What is it about those numbers?

There is something so seductive about watching the numbers on the scale go down.
But what is it?
Why is it so powerful?
For me, physical activity has always been a challenge. I grew up as a fairly sedentary kid from a pretty sedentary family. So, those numbers on the scale provide reassurance that my suffering is not in vain...there are "results" right before my eyes!
So, what about the times when those numbers don't budge, or, God forbid, go up?
What did I do wrong?
What most recent food item can I look back on with guilt and anger? Damn you, fudge cake! You weren't even that great!
How can I stop being pushed around by those numbers?
How can I keep my focus on the process of being healthy, and making healthy choices, when the alluring appeal of smaller numbers will always be there?
