Laughter Causes Weight Loss

This was in an email I got from IRISHSWEETPEA53 on the 2017 Spring Shooting Stars 5% Challenge team. I've read this is several different places. Easiest way to lose weight.... laugh.

Studies have shown that laughing increases both the heart rate and calorie burn by 20%. The longer people laughed, the greater the effects. Just 15 minutes of laughter a day burns 40 calories.. depending on how much you weigh and on the duration and intensity of laughter. Taken one step further… those 15 minutes of laughter will result in 1 - 4 lbs. loss of weight a year and giggling for 15 minutes a day will burn up to 5 lbs. off your weight in a year. What a fun way to lose weight! But unfortunately, our sense of humor is one of the first things we lose when we go on a diet. We do not find anything fun in cutting or counting calories or in sweating to lose those inches and pounds.

When we laugh, we forget about our stresses and stressors and the problems we face. We can't have fun and be stressed at the same time. When we are in a happier frame of mind, it becomes less difficult to take on exercise and adopt a healthier eating pattern. Whether spontaneous or forced, your body thinks you're having fun when you smile (even if you are not) because smiling activates the pleasure centers of your brain. By smiling you literally become more physically relaxed and enjoy a greater sense of fulfillment and enjoyment. Smiling and laughing lessens your internal agitation which can decrease your cravings to eat when you're not really hungry.

So can a few minutes of hearty laughter a day replace your exercise equipment? Not likely, but giggles, laughter, or a combination of laughter and exercise definitely does help burn calories and can help you in your weight loss program. So this week … go the extra “smile” and laugh a few pounds away!
