Continuing the Journey

I gave myself a good long look in the mirror and decided that enough was enough. The tools I had in my toolkit and the online support were not moving the needle. If my weight wasn't going down, I either needed to accept that or do something different.

We know I've done doctor supervised very low calorie diet. I got to goal and promptly put it all back on. Plus 20 pounds. I've done crash diets and got to goal. The intent of Sparkpeople was that I would learn how to do this a healthy sustainable way. But despite my best efforts, my fabulous teams, the marvelous challenges, and the amazing support I received from all of you it was not moving the needle.

I decided to talk to a weight loss professional made available to me through a company benefit. In our first session she pointed out that I have a "perfectionist mentality." Duh. That took all of 5 minutes for her to peg. In week 1 she said "pick one thing you can actually do this week. Just one."

I decided I would eat breakfast 5 days a week. I frankly don't see the value of breakfast and I normally don't eat breakfast. Then she said "that's your job. Your ONLY job is to eat breakfast 5 days a week. Do anything else you want." Are you KIDDING? And I'll lose weight? But ok, she's a professional so off I went.

I ate breakfast for a week. Did not consciously change anything else about my eating. And you won't believe what happened. I lost a little weight. Because I saw the scale creeping down I was excited and I tried a few other things. I tried getting some water. I tried strength training once for 10 minutes..

Week 2 we met and she said "can you add one other tiny healthy thing to your list?" We agreed I would drink 4 glasses of water 5 days a week and I'd try 10 minutes of strength training 3 days a week. She reminded me, "NOTHING else. That is ALL you have to do." Guess what happened? I lost more weight.

Our third weekly meeting was Friday. This week I am continuing with breakfast, upping it to 6 glasses of water 7 days a week, continuing with strength training for 10 minutes 3 times a week. I am adding in "try a strength training video" just to see what other options are available I don't know about. And, I added in my dear friend SparkFran's constant struggle...tracking 3 days this week. On the WEEKEND. She said "you don't have to CHANGE what you eat this weekend. Just TRACK it. These are the ONLY things you have to do."

The mentality is working for me. I've lost 6 pounds in 3 weeks. I get up every morning eager to see the scale. When I would normally have self-crushing incrimination I think "no, my ONLY job is these things."

NSV's include better skin. I had a dry patch on my face that I was moisturizing like mad multiple times a day. Now that I'm getting water it is gone. My joints don't creak as much. Now that I am doing even minimal strength training I don't hobble about when I wake up in the morning.

I know I've been super quiet. That's because I just did not know what to do to turn this around for myself. Thank you to all of you who reached out with concern. I don't know if this is The Answer, but I can tell you for right now it's working wonders for me. I wanted to let you know!

Edit: REEDSKI raises an excellent point. I am not saying anything new that Sparkpeople doesn't encourage us to do. I only say that without this extra shove I was not getting myself into the necessary head space. This extra push is working for me.

    so glad to hear from you. And, so glad you sought help. Sometimes it takes someone to point us in the right direction; and remind you of what you know. AND not to bite off more than you can chew. I think this is fabulous and bravo to you for being brave.

    You have had LOT this year. Your dad. Illness. Probably more that I don't know.
    I read something today, from Billie Jean King; "Women are taught to be perfectionists and men are taught to be brave." No wonder women have so many image and self esteem issues.

    Thank you for reminding me that we just need to work on changing one little thing at a time. Breakfast helps to jump start the metabolism. I used to hate breakfast and skip it. Now, I have breakfast every day.

    Change your mind ... and the rest WILL follow.

    I have believed in this motto since the 1980s when I heard it. This year I decided to focus on my behaviors and lo and behold life started to totally change.

    Eating s-l-o-w-l-y and stopping when I was physically full ... was a true game changer for me.

    What ever we do to lose the weight ... we have to continue to do to keep it off.

    Great to hear from you. It is helpful to read this. So often it's easy to be overwhelmed by all the change to get to one's goal, but it makes so much sense to break it into small bits. Every change matters and can make a difference and perfectionism needs to be thrown out the window. Thanks for the reminder.

    * Lost 12 pounds in about 6 weeks once just by focusing on breakfast.

    " She reminded me, "NOTHING else. That is ALL you have to do." Guess what happened? I lost more weight. "

    love that you found the right person for you and the answer to success . I find when i get 8 hours uninterrupted sleep I lose a little. now to figure out how to sleep like that again. hugs glad your back and successful

    Well, you may have been away for a bit, but this coming-back blog could not have come at a better time for me! Building healthy habits such as eating breakfast and drinking water, in baby steps and not all at the same time, DO make a difference. In my case, we recently had our "quarterly pizza" night (we have pizza only four times a year), and the Diet Pepsi I had with it led to a couple of weeks of diet soda with my dinners, and a stall and a regain. Now it's back to water, and I'm seeing my body releasing whatever it wanted to hold on to.

    I think "they" say it takes something like 21 days to form a habit, but for me, it's more like 60-90 days, but it certainly becomes easier as the days go by and pretty soon I find myself incorporating these small changes into my routine without thinking about it.

    I am so glad you checked in. And it is good to know that some companies offer this type of assistance, as this coach seems to understand the journey to health.

    Continue to not let your, ahm, perfectionistic tendencies, get in the way, because, remember, it's already working and you don't have to be at 100% all of the time (or ever?)!

    What struck me is that all of the things you are doing are vigorously recommended by SP in articles, SP blogs, teams, Trivia, Challenges, etc. For those who do not have access to a professional or feel inclined to do this on your own, SP is a true gift. Years ago in counseling (I went to couseling for my food issues but back then they didn't have a clue how to help overeaters. After 2 sessions in person they put me in group therapy with sex, drug, and alcohol addicts. My naive ideology was turned upside down finding out there were sex addicts. And they had problems. I only went to group once and gave up on counseling.) I was told I was a perfectionist. (I thought, "Yeah, maybe a frustrated perfectionist." ) I think the impetus to make any kind of change is to realize it must be done and can be done but you have to get your brain to accept this. Your brain is where healthy living starts.
