Veterans problems

Friday, November 03, 2017

Hi Sparks Friends, I did mange to get an appointment at a Veteran’s Administration approved doctor. My appointment was for 10:00 am. I arrived at 9:00 am and there was absolutely no parking or any available spaces. I drove around until 10 am. If I am over 10 Minutes late the Doctor and the Veteran’s Administration automatically cancel my appointment. If this happens I am considered not wanting medical care. This automatically can without any human input stop the VA from any responsibility to medically assist me a 100% service connected disabled in the future. I did cancel at 10 am my Veteran’s Administration medical appointment. Sometime in 2018, my next available appointment maybe actually had. The temporary hold the VA San Antonio TX clerk had to use was 12/31/2017. Not an actual doctor appointment, merely a chart check but prevents me being kicked out of the VA system. What I hate is not being able to park within 5 miles of my VA designated Care - will many leg surgeries and handicaps - normal! Veteran Administration and bureaucracy said no matter what call a taxi or Uber driver if there is no place to park to receive medical care. Yet, no money to pay this extra time and cost for the average veteran! Sorry, I am feeling very frustrated and maybe venting.

VA vans or assistance to a VA appointment have to have 10 weeks advance notice, min numbers plus cost at least $25 or more/same as cab/uber

If I had know that this was a possibility, I would have had someone drop me off and pick me up. That takes advance planning of ? If left up to the VA. I admit since I never ran into this problem but now have VA snow birds here - I will do so.

That's crazy! Is there a bus route or someone who could drop you off and pick you up?

That is inexcusable to say the least!

While he system here in Canada is not perfect, our Veterans are usually able to choose their own Doctors, pharmacies etc. My husband retired in 1993 after almost 28 years service and he has always used our family doctor since then.

Having said that.... we approached Veterans Affairs here last year to get a ahndrail put on our front step, which they were willing to do up to a cost of $1000, but when we tried to get them to actually rebuild the step because he (and I have major problems with it as well) had tripped on it several times - we were refused despite the fact that the total cost for the handrail AND new lower rise stairs came to just over $823.... Makes no sense to me!

So sorry that you are having to go through all this just to get medical care! HOpe things improve for you soon!

It is frustrating. It seems either no one cares, or the people who do care do not have the power to change how it dysfunctions.

    Poor service for sure.

I've heard that veterans medical care is better than nothing. Where I live, its a 3.5 hour trip , so its usually an over night stay.

Most folks think veterans receiving care at VA expense have it made. If you were willing to die for your country ok! Why doctor’s appointments with no way (park) to reasonable get to them?
