It has been more than half a year since I last posted a blog. At that time I was writing about gratitude. That exercise had me in a good place. Why I stopped blogging? I really don't know.

On October 16th everything changed for me. While crossing the road on my bike an SUV ploughed into me, breaking two bones in my lower leg. I had surgery on the 23rd (yes, our health care system is broken) and am unable to do any weight bearing for at least the next 2 months. Prior to this I considered myself to be very active; I was reasonably fit for someone my age. But now? No 10,000 steps a day. No 10 minutes of exercise. In fact, even the hobbling I've been doing on crutches has been deemed 'inadvisable' in terms of advancing the healing process. I am to REST REST REST and stay off the leg. The body could still reject the new hardware. The leg could form scar tissue instead of knitting together. I could experience a major set back.

So, here I am, with lots and lots of time on my hands. I have told myself on numerous occasions that I should get back to journaling. But I never did. Why not the present? Why not dig deep and find those things for which I am grateful? I know they're there. Although the past few weeks have been a real nightmare for me, I also know that there have been moments of, if not joy, then contentment, happiness, feeling loved. Those are the things I will be writing about.

    I'm very sorry to read about your accident. I hope the healing process will be quicker than the doctor's anticipate. I can only imagine how hard it is to go from being pretty active to not being able to do much of anything.

    I am glad to see you have joined in on the 30 day Gratitude Challenge. I'm sure it can be difficult to find things to be grateful for when something like this happens. What I found helped me during a 6 month recovery from hip replacement surgery was to focus on the little positive changes, love of friends and family, and ANY progress made no matter how small. Write them down in a journal. You will be able to look back and have tangible proof of all of the healing and progress and the gifts the universe sends your way during this time. emoticon

    I remember well the day you chose happiness Mayie and was in awe of all the things you found to be grateful for back then and again now. You are one awesome and inspiring woman! The exercises EO4WELLNESS suggested are a great idea. If you don't have weights for arm exercises a can of veggies/ soup or whatever you have in your cupboard will work to start with and then maybe you will have to duct tape 2 together as you get stronger. I'm sure you will come up with ideas of your own. You could even use those crutches as weights if you hold it with both hands and raise and lower it over your head. Just think how beautiful those arms will be!! Wishing you a full recovery and especially no complications.

    I'm really sorry about what happened to you. I hope the healing process will be quicker than the doctor's anticipate. I know how hard it is to go from being pretty active to not being able to do much of anything. It can certainly be frustrating.

    It can be hard to find things to be grateful for when something like this happens. I hope you can find one thing in each day to be grateful for.

    I am pleased to read a blog from you, albeit with the bad news about your accident. I'm hoping you can use this enforced rest to begin your journals again, your writing about gratitude was really genuinely inspiring, it was so real, so honest and I loved reading them and reflecting my thoughts upon them.

    I am so extremely sorry for all that has happened to you. Prayers that your healing progresses as it should. It is not easy to be inactive for sure. I can only imagine how frustrated I would be. So sorry.

    Some days it is harder than others to find your gratitude, but if we really try, we can find at least one thing.

    Mayie, That sounds like a good, healing and inspirational plan. I look forward to your blogs. I also agree with EO4WELLNESS. Using chair exercises and exercising your upper body will help your blood flow and help your lower body to heal. With Dr. approval of course. Do what you can, when you can. We want you well but it's not a race. Hugs.

    Welcome back to the world of blogging/journalling! It's always good to write things down - and I'm constantly inspired and informed by the comments people leave on my blogs.

    I can only begin to imagine how you must be feeling - I sometimes wonder how I would (will?) manage if I could not get out and about for my walks and runs.

    Advice from those who have had similar experiences is helpful. I can feel the sunshine returned in your words today - and look forward to reading more from you in the coming days and weeks.

    I look forward to your blogs. I am so sorry that you were hit by a car. I pray that everything heals properly. I'd be one that would relive that event over and over. I understand about contentment in the midst of not felling well. I have had kidney stones which made me sick to my stomach and there were times when I was content because of not having nausea an vomiting and not experiencing discomfort. The stone was removed my surgery.

    Take your time and follow your doctors' advice to get well. I'm hoping that journaling will give you something to look forward to.

    Maye glad to hear you want to write again.
    It's going to take time to heal but you'll get there especially if you follow doctor's orders and do the physio to make you strong again.

    Oh, I'm so glad you started blogging again! So sorry to hear of your accident. I had an accident many years ago which caused me to be non-weight bearing for about a year, but only one leg--not both. Being on crutches was EXCELLENT exercise--and I lost a LOT of weight and got into great shape. It is an amazing exercise program, but not one that anyone would volunteer for....

    In the end, your leg will be stronger but it does take some physical therapy to restore full range of motion--but oh so well worth it! Since you like activity but are limited by your physical circumstances, this is a good time to focus on things like blogging. I'm grateful you posted so we can share in your journey. I'd suggest too trying the chair exercises here on SparkTV to keep your upper body active while your lower body is resting if that's okay with your doctor's orders. That flow of oxygen in the rest of your body might help the leg heal.
